Sundara Raja Perumal Koil in Azhagiya Manavalam

NamPerumal stayed here with his concerts during the Sultan invasion of Srirangam

Located about 15kms North West of Tiruchirapalli is the West facing Sundara Raja Perumal Koil in Azhagiya Manavalam Village near Manasanallur, where the Lord is seen in a grand standing posture with Sridevi and Bhoodevi.

The story of the Sundara Raja Perumal Koil in Azhagiya Manavalam Village dates back to the 14th Century AD to the time when Mohammed Bin Tughlag invaded the Srirangam temple and the threat to the idols of Lord Ranganatha loomed large.

Foreseeing this, the utsav deity (now called Nam Perumal) was taken out of Srirangam as a precautionary measure and was taken around to different places like Azhagar Hills, Azhvaar Tirunagari in Tamil Nadu, Tiruvananthapuram in Kerala and Melkote in Karnataka.

While the battle was going on with the Sultanate kings, Azhagiya Manavalan and his consorts resided here at the Sundara Raja Perumal temple in Azhagiya Manavalam village. A smart lady in Azhagiya Manavalam village used her guile and protected the idol of the utsav deity of Lord Ranganatha and also helped the forces outwit the Madurai Sultanate.

It was in 1371 AD that Azhagiya Manavalan and his consort left this temple to reside back at Srirangam.

The name NamPerumal to Srirangam Lord

It was that year that a delighted Launderer on seeing Utsava deity of Lord Ranganatha at the Azhagiya Manavalam village called out for the Srirangam Lord as ‘Nam Perumal’(Our Lord). Ever since, the Utsava deity of Lord Ranganatha at Srirangam has come to be known as Namperumal.

Since Namperumal resided here before making his trip back to Srirangam, the villagers dedicated the special harvest from the Azhagiya Manavalam village to NamPerumal of Srirangam. Every year in the Tamil Calendar month of Chitrai, the harvest is brought from Azhagiya Manavalam Village to the Srirangam temple and handed over to Namperumal. This event is called ‘Kathir Alankaaram’.

One can view the three well known temples of Trichy from inside the Sundara Raja Perumal temple- Srirangam Ranganaatha temple, Jambukeswarar temple at Thiruvanaikaval and Uchi Pillayar atop the rock.

Srinivasa Perumal temple in Semmanacheri

Prarthana Sthalam for the 'unmarried' and 'childless couples'
Belief is that one can regain lost vision by offering sincere prayers at this temple

Located about 30kms South of Madras on the Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR) just after Infosys campus and Sathyabhama University is an ancient East Facing Srinivasa Perumal temple, in Semmanacheri, that has been recently renovated and wears a new look.

History
Belief is that the temple may be over 1500 years old and may have been built by the Pallavas, who were also responsible for the construction of several Divya Desams in this region including Thiru Kadal Mallai at Mahabalipuram (Maamallapuram. Later on, renovation work at this temple is said to have been undertaken by Nayak Kings and Chettiars.

The experts from Archeological Survey of India (ASI) believe that the temple in its current form and structure may be about 500 years old.

The Story

The story goes that once upon a time, there was famine at this place and the Pallava king, Narasimha Pallava, invoked the blessings of Srinivasa Perumal to help relieve the pains of the people. Pleased with his prayers, Lord Srinivasa is said to have appeared before the king and brought rains to this region.

As a result, the belief is that the Lord fulfils the wishes of all devotes who come here and offer prayers, with sincerity, at this temple.

Prarthana Sthalam
The temple is said to be a prarthana sthalam for unmarried people and childless couples. There is a tank half a km east of the temple. Those (with eye problems) who take bath in the sacred tank and offer sincere prayers to Srinivasa Perumal are said to regain their (lost) eye sight.

Interesting Sculptures

One finds several interesting sculptures on the Western side of the temple including an a single stone sculptures of Shiva, Lingam, Mahalakshmi and Ganesha, said to be a 1000years old. This can now be found adjacent to the Thaayar Sannidhi.

Agni Devan, who is said to be present only in very ancient temples is seen here with 2 heads and 3 legs, on the Southern side of the tower above the Sanctum.

There is a separate sannidhi for Thaayar and for Kaalinga Narthanar on the western side of the temple.

Poovarasan Kuppam Narasimha temple

This temple is referred to as the ‘Dakshina Ahobilam’
Debts and Enemies go away if one visits this temple and offers a 48 day prayer

Located about 18kms North of Panruti and 18kms East of Villupuram is the East Facing Lakshmi Narasimha temple in Poovarasan Kuppam. This is one of the four Narasimha temples around Villupuram (others being Anthili, Parikkal and Singiri – There is also the Sayana Narasimha at Thiru Vithigai).

Both Singiri Narasimha and Parikkal Narasimha which are in a straight line are facing the Poovarasan Kuppam Narasimha.

First appearance after Hiranya Samhaaram- Dakshina Ahobilam

For the first time, after the Hiranya Samharam at Ahobilam, Lord appeared here in the same form and provided darshan to the Saptha Rishis as Lakshmi Narasimha. Hence, this temple is referred to as Dakshina Ahobilam.

Thaayar’s Posture
A unique feature at this temple is the posture of Lakshmi. One eye of the Goddess is turned towards the Lord and the other eye is welcoming the devotees. Also, interestingly Lakshmi and Narasimha are seen at the same height at this temple!!!

One of Eight Narasimha Temples

This is one of the 8 temples in Tamil Nadu, where Lord Narasimha provided darshan after the killing of Hiranya. The other 7 are Singarakudi near Pondicherry/Cuddalore, Anthili near Thiru Kovilur, Parikkal near Kedilam, Sholingur, Nammakkal, Singaraperumal Koil near Chengalpet and Sinthalavadi.

3rd Century Ad Temple
There are culverts inside this temple dating back to the 3rd Century AD. Also, there are references to construction during Narasimha Pallava’s reign (7th Century AD). There are also inscriptions indicating Krishna Deva Raya’s visit to this temple (about 500 years ago).

Prarthana Sthalam-Wishes Fulfilled
All wishes of the devotees are said to be fulfilled if one visits this temple, lights a ghee lamp and recites the Mantra Raja Patha Stotram twice a day for 48 days. One should tie a 5 rupee coin to a Manjal cloth and drop it at the temple, once the 48 day period is over.

One should also prepare Panagam (prepared out of jaggery) every day for the Lord. No non Vegetarian food should be consumed during this 48 day period.

Bad Debts and enemies are said to go away and the belief is that one will live in prosperity after a visit to the three Narasimha temples seen in one line near Villupuram – Parikkal- Poovarasan Kuppam and Singiri.

Festivals

Swathi Nakshatram
It is auspicious to visit the temple every month on Swathi Nakshatram, when Sudarshana and Dhanvantri homams are performed.

Aadi Utsavam in Srirangam

A Thanks Giving Event- Festival to honour Goddess Cauvery for her significant contribution

As can be seen from several of the festivals and events at the Srirangam temple, Lord Namperumal recognizes and respects each and every one who has played a role in the well being of the people. And this gesture of rewarding is almost always done immediately without any delay.

The Aadi (18th day festival) festival is an event to honour the significant role played by Goddess Cauvery in the development of the Srirangam temple and the peaceful and prosperous lives of the people there. It also marks the first procession of Lord Namperumal in the month of Aadi.

The significance of Cauvery can be compared to the Vraja River which flows in Vaikuntam. Just as one who attains moksham has to enter Vaikuntam after a bath at Vraja river, one who wishes to have darshan of Lord Ranganatha has to bathe first in the Cauvery before entering the temple.

Singing Cauvery's Praise

River Cauvery, as praised by Emberumaanar, is even more pious than the sacred Ganges. Parasara Bhattar, the eldest of the two sons of Koorathazhvan, who is said to have lived in the 12th Century AD explains this beautifully in his verse.

‘The water flow at the Cauvery is fast, touching the edges of the banks on both the sides. When one closely looks at the froth, it seems as if Cauvery is laughing.

Parasara Bhattar reasons out this laughter of the Goddess. "Cauvery seems to be laughing at Goddess Ganga and saying ‘All of them seem to be singing praise only of you and your greatness. Yes, the water there flows through from Brahmma’s Kamandalam to the legs of Lord Vishnu and then Shiva keeps the water on his coil (on his head). You are Lord’s Shree Paatha Theertham.’"

Parasara Bhattar says ‘Theertham Sunthathi’ in reference to Cauvery-a river that makes all other rivers pious. Those who bathe here with purity of thought are said to be relieved from all sins.’

Parasara Bhattar goes on to say, ‘The beautiful garlands that one sees every day around Lord Ranganatha are a result of the pure water from the Cauvery. Trees are seen all around the place, flowers bloom every day. All streets and corners are clean and cool, with water from the Cauvery.’

Even more significant is the fact that though there are 10 wells inside the Srirangam temple, the theertham for the Lord and his Thirumanjanam is from the Cauvery, every single day. Is this not a great contribution of the Goddess?

What more, Goddess Cauvery has encircled the Lord from all sides coming round and round him day after day and her presence makes his stay right in the middle of Srirangam a cool and comfortable one keeping him in the right spirits at all times. Thus, Goddess Cauvery is always near Ranganatha.

NAMPERUMAL ENTERS CAUVERY
It is the Goddess who has kept the farmers in the delta region of Tamil Nadu happy and prosperous all these years.

For such a significant contribution made by Goddess Cauvery, Lord Ranganatha wonders as to what he can do to recognize and praise her in public.

Namperumal leaves to meet Goddess Cauvery
With this as the background, Lord Namperumal, the Utsavar deity of Lord Ranganatha, goes in his palanquin on a 6 hour procession to Amma Mandapam on the Southern Banks of the Cauvery to praise Goddess Cauvery and shower gifts on her for keeping every one happy.

It is believed that this is the time when the Cauvery is at its peak with water gushing across from the West and flowing through the green belt of Tamil Nadu down east- Thiruvayaru, Thanjavur, Kumbakonam and Mayavaram (things may not be as rosy these days as it once used to be!!).

6 hour Procession

The Aadi 18 event of Lord Rangantha (through his processional deity) making it to the Cauvery river banks is an appreciation and recognition of this contribution of Goddess Cauvery and his way of showing gratitude to her for helping the farmers with the right quantity of water for the coming harvest season.

Namperumal reaches Amma mandapam, South of Srirangam, right in the mid afternoon heat, and goes straight on to the Southern banks of Cauvery for Theerthavari. For the next 3 hours, he provides darshan to the devotees at the Mandapam.

2 special events in the evening
The evening of the Aadi 18 Utsavam is marked by two special events.

Showering Gifts on the Goddess
The first event saw Namperumal’s representatives getting on to the temple elephant and showering gifts - Garlands, Thiru Mangalyam, Thaligai, Fruits and Saree- on the Goddess Cauvery in a thanks giving gesture as per the wishes of the Lord.

EVENING DOSAI FOR GODDESS CAUVERY
Later in the evening, on his way back to the temple, Namperumal seeks a 9pm appointment with Andal at the Veli Andal temple, the original Andal temple in Srirangam(before a sannidhi came up later inside the temple) on the Southern end of West Adaivalanjan and standing right opposite Andal exchanges garland with her bringing to end the ‘Aadi 18’ Utsavam.

A CROWDED VELI ANDAL SANNIDHI
The Aadi 18 Utsavam this year(2009) took place in Srirangam on Monday August 3.

Parikkal Lakshmi Narasimha

Ancient temple built by Vasantharaja of Vriddachalam is one of the four Narasimha temples in the Villupuram region
Prarthana Sthalam- Debts, Enemies and Diseases are said to go away if one offers prayers at this temple

Located around 25kms South West of Villupuram and 3kms west of the Kedilam Cross Road off the Chennai-Trichi National Highway is the1800 year old Lakshmi Narasimha temple in Parikkal.

This is one of the four Narasimha temples in this region. The others being Anthili (near Thiru Kovilur), Poovarasan Kuppam (15kms North of Panruti) and Singiri (12kms South of Pondicherry).

Also, there is the Sayana Narasimha in Thiru Vathigai in Panruti.

The Story

Vasantharaja ruled this place with his capital at Vriddachalam and wanted to build a temple for Lord Narasimha. Constantly troubled by Parakalasura (said to be a relative of Hiranyakashipu), Vasantharaja undertook a penance here as directed by his Guru. Answering his prayers, Lord Narasimha is said to have appeared here and killed the Asura.

Having only seen the destructive mood of an angry Narasimha, Vasantharaja invoked the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi to provide darshan with the Lord displaying his softer form.

Kanakavalli Thaayar is said to have sat on his lap, cooled him down and provided darshan to Vasantharaja, the Devas and the Rishis at this place.

Delighted at the darshan of Lord Narasimha in this form, Vasantharaja requested that this place be named after the asura who provided the king with the opportunity to have a darshan of the Lord.

Hence, this place was referred to as ‘Parikala’puram, which in course of time became ‘Parikkal’.

While the original temple was built by Vasantharaja using red bricks, lime and wood, it is believed to have been destroyed during the Mughal invasion. The temple that one sees today is said to have been built by Veera Narasimha of Karnataka using granites. Parikkal Lord Narasimha is said to be the Kula Deivam for the Madhwas of Karnataka.

Presence of two Anjaneya idols
An interesting feature at this temple is the presence of two Anjaneya idols in the same Sannidhi. Unlike other temples, Anjaneya gets the 2nd right of Thirumanjanam after Lord Narasimha (in other temples, Thaayar is the one who gets the Thirumanjanam after the Lord).

Prarthana Sthalam
This is a Prarthana Sthalam – Three kinds of worries for human beings- Debts, Enemies and Diseases - are said to go away if one offers prayers at the Parikkal Narasimha temple.

Inscriptions on the temple walls
Confirming the rich history behind this temples are the several inscriptions found on the outside walls of the temple dating back several hundred years, prominent among them include the fish shaped inscriptions. This leads one to two inferences: One, the Pandya kings, whose symbol was a ‘Fish’, may have contributed to this temple in a big way. The other is the story relating to Vasantharaja, who one night saw in his dreams fishes near this place…an indication of impending victory in his battle against the asura.

Some of the other prominent inscriptions:

13th Century AD inscription indicating contribution by Pallava king Koperichingan

14th Century AD inscription that describes the contribution of Thiru Bhuvanam Chakravarthy Konerinmai Kondaan

Another inscription shares light on the tax exemption in nearby villages -Thiruvennai Nallur, Aanathur and Sithanthur and using these funds for the improvement and maintenance of this temple

Raja Raja Chozhan I is said to have constructed the temple tank

Renovation of the temple by Pallava and Nayak kings

Festivals
There are festivals round the year at this temple.

On the 5th day of Thai, Lord Narasimha goes on a procession to Pennai River and stays there the night.

On Maasi Magam - full moon day- the Lord goes on a 10km procession to the Kedila River.

On Panguni Uthiram, the Lord is taken on a procession to Orathur Village.

Every month on Swathi Nakshatram, there is a special Thirumanjanam in the evening and a Sannidhi procession inside the temple.

It is believed to be good to visit the temple on Puratasi Saturday

Arjuna’s praise of Thiruvathigai Lord
Arjuna is said to have visited this temple at the end of the Mahabaratha war. Sage Veda Vyasa in his narration refers to Arjuna's announcement ‘Thiruvathigai Kanden’.

Lord Narasimha in Sayana Kolam

Lord Narasimha is seen in a Sleeping Posture facing south. It is believed that Lord Narasimha came here tired after a battle with Vakrasuran and killing him, and is said to have taken rest. Hence he is seen in a Sayana Kolam. Reference to this can be seen in Narasinga Puranam.

This is the only temple where Narasimha is seen in a sleeping posture.

Thiru Kovilur Lord visits Thiru Vathigai

During this month of 30 days, there is a Ghee lamp Utsavam( all electrical lamps are switched off at this temple) and Saara Narayanan provides darshan just like Srinivasa Perumal of Tirupathi.

Also, a one day Brahmotsavam in Puratasi (6am-8pm) is an event to experience at this temple.

The alankarams for the Lord during the Puratasi festival is a great spectacle.

Kaattu Azhagiya Singar Srirangam

A transformational turnaround
Namperumal makes his annual trip to this temple on Vijayadasami evening
Devotees are now thronging the temple in large numbers on Swathi and Pradosham

Located 200 yards east of the Srirangam Railway Station is the Kaattu Azhagiya Singa Perumal temple in Srirangam. This temple dates back to a period prior to the Srirangam Ranganatha temple when this Kshetram was referred to as Velli Thirumutham. Only much later, after the construction of the Ranganatha temple, this place came to be called Thiruvarangam.

Lord Narasimha is seen in a seated posture facing the West (towards Srirangam Ranganatha temple) with Lakshmi to his left.

The Story
This Kshetram was a forest thousands of years ago, surrounded by the two rivers- Cauvery in the South and Coloroon in the North, and inhabited only by the rishis and their families. Time and again, wild animals would attack the families of the rishis and consume them for a meal.

While the rishis had the power to burn the animals just by their looks, they would not forego the fruits of their penance by killing these wild animals. Instead they undertook a more severe form of penance invoking the blessings of Lord Narasimha.

Pleased with their prayers, Lord Narasimha appeared here providing darshan to these rishis. As per their request, he stayed here with Goddess Lakshmi protecting the lives of all those who offer their sincere prayers at this place.

The idol of Lakshmi Narasimha here is a Svayambu moorthy and the temple was built and renovated at later periods of time. No inscriptions are found relating to the period of construction of the outer walls.

The Name

As the Lord appeared here in the middle of a forest and stayed back to protect the devotees, he came to be called ‘Kaattu’ Azhagiya Singar.

Utsava deity at the Ranganatha Temple

Centuries ago, with this temple being in the midst of a forest and with minimal human existence, it was considered unsafe and hence the utsava deity was placed inside the Koorathaazhvan Sannidhi at the Srirangam Ranganatha temple. That tradition has come to stay and today one finds the Utsava idol of Lord Narasimha not at the Kaattazhagivya Singa Perumal Koil but at the Srirangam Ranganatha temple.

Old time residents say that this place was very much like a forest till the early 1970s. It is only in the last 3 decades that there has been development around the Kaatazhagiya Singar temple.

Namperumal’s visit to Kaattazhagiya Singar temple
Once a year, on Vijayadasami day, Namperumal, the Utsava deity of Lord Ranganatha of Srirangam, comes on a street procession to this temple in a palanquin. Goddess is believed to have undertaken penance at this place and handed Namperumal a bow and an arrow at the end of the 10th day of the Navarathri festival.

After Thirumanjam, the event of Namperumal on a Golden Horse Vaahanam, striking an arrow on the Vanni tree to signify the destruction of evil forces and protection of the devotees, is enacted every year on the Vijayadasami evening at this temple before Namperumal makes his way back to Srirangam.

Special Occasions at the temple
There are special poojas and Thirumanjanam organised every month on the Swathi Nakshatram and Prathosham days. Also, Saturday is an auspicious day to visit this temple.

Adhi Thiruvarangam Ranganatha

One of the oldest temples for Lord Ranganatha dating back to Kretha Yugam
Gigantic Ranganatha is bigger than the Lord at Srirangam
(http://prtraveller.blogspot.in/2007/09/108-divya-desams-srirangam-lord.html)

Located about 60kms South West of Villupuram on the banks of the now completely dry South Pennai river is Adhi Thiruvarangam, an almost unknown and yet, one of the oldest temples for Lord Ranganatha. This temple dates back to the first Yugam (Kretha Yugam) and the first Avathaaram (Matsya Avathaaram). Hence, this Kshetram is referred to as ‘Adhi’ Rangam.

Lord Ranganatha is seen in a gigantic east facing sleeping posture and measures over 15 feet, not seen in any Divya Desam.

Historical reference
Reference to this temple is found in Skaantha Puranam Uthara Kaandam - 301-306 athyayam under Uthara Ranga Mahatmiyam.

The story
There are three stories that describe the significance of this temple.

1. The Devas, who lost the Vedic scriptures after being defeated by Asura Shomugan, approached Brahmma who in turn sought the help of Lord Narayana.

Finding out the hide-out of the Asura under the sea, Lord Narayana took the form of Matsya and defeated the Asura and handed back the Vedic scriptures to Brahmma. It is believed that the Lord initiated the Vedic lessons to Brahmma in this Kshetram. One sees the Lord with his left thumb folded towards his fingers in a posture indicating this.

Acceding to the prayers of the Devas, Lord Narayana is said to have directed his sculptor Vishwakarma to create an image of his similar to the one in Thiru Paarkadal.

2. In Kretha Yugam, a king by name Suratha Keerthi lived a prosperous life but he had one unfulfilled wish. He did not have a child. As suggested by Sage Narada, he came, with his wife, to the place where Lord Ranganatha was sleeping under Adhiseshan and undertook penance. Answering his prayers, he was blessed with four children.

3. Chandran, who showed love to only one of his 27 wives, was cursed by his other wives to lose his handsome looks. He came to Uthara Rangam, undertook penance in the temple tank to the South East of the temple and was liberated from his curse. Hence, the pushkarni here is called Chandran Pushkarani.

Lord in a South – North Sleeping Posture
Lying in a sleeping posture from South to North, Lord Ranganatha has his head on the lap of Sri Devi-on his left, while his left leg is stretched towards Bhoo Devi seen at his feet. To his right is Garuda ever ready to be of service to the Lord.

Prarthana Sthalam
This is a Prarthana Sthalam for:

Good Education (as the Lord initiated Brahmma with the Vedic lessons)
Progeny(as the Lord granted the wishes of the King who prayed here) and
One’s overall well being as Lord Ranganatha himself directed that an image of his be created at this place

PeriAzhvaar lavishes praise on Srirangam Ranganatha in one of his verses
in Poochoodal.

He says that the moment one has a darshan of the Lord of Srirangam, one's eyes lit up and one starts rejoicing like one does when one sees the dark clouds covering the sun just before the rains start to pour down.

He refers to the Lord as one who took birth to redeem the seven worlds. He asks the bridegroom, of the Goddess of Wealth, one who resides in Srirangam to come and adorn the beautiful Jasmine flowers which he says have an ever lasting fragrance.

Raghava Bhattar Mannargudi passes away

Mannargudi Raghava Deekshithar hit by a vehicle near Madurantakam
He had been serving Lord Rajagopalaswamy for the last 75years Possibly the oldest active Bhattar passed away yesterday in a road accident when a vehicle knocked him over while he was by the side of the Madras-Trichy highway near Madurantakam on Sunday night(at around 12.15am monday 29th June, just 12hours after he had received the long standing service award from Kinchitkaram Trust at the Kamarajar Arangam in Madras.

Raghava Deekshitar was 88 years and had been serving Lord Rajagopalaswamy of Mannargudi for the last 75+ years(Yes, he had been at the temple since the age of 12). I met Raghava Deekshithar a few years ago when I first visited Mannargudi temple. Since then, my interactions with him and his son the 60year old Jayakumar Deekshithar have been continuous and engaging. While every one is looking to make the extra buck, Raghava Deekshithar would be up early morning every single day to open the doors for his devotees to have darshan of Lord Rajagopalaswamy at Mannargudi or Ramar at Vaduvur.

Only 3 months ago, when I reached the Mannargudi temple at 6am, Raghava Deeskhithar ‘forced’ me to join him on a 13km bus trip to Vaduvur for Vishvaroopam Darshan at the Ramar Koil there. He would not let me go without visiting Vaduvur Ramar. He would stand in the bus through this entire journey such was his devotion for the Lord.

Despite his old age, he would not ask any one for a seat in the bus. I handed over the pooja items to him that morning at the Vaduvur Ramar Koil. He expressed happiness at this and blessed me to do a lot more for the perumal koils. The story goes that, and I have heard this time and again over the last few years, that he would travel all over Tamil Nadu and to other Perumal koils all on his own and by taking the state bus transport.

Even on this trip to receive the award from Kinchitkaram Trust, he was all on his own with no one accompanying him. A meeting with Raghava Deekshithar was enough to revitalise the hope that all is well with Perumal Koils in Tamil Nadu- his indomitable spirit of engaging with the Lord and his determination to visit other Divya Desams all alone by bus at an age when most would be back home on their easy chair, gave one a lot of cheer and confidence that age is not a restriction to serve the Lord if you had the inclination.

Periyazhvaar composed 10 verses referred to as Poochoodal. In his 7th paasuram in the Poochoodal, PeriAzhvaar sings praise of Kudanthai Aaravamudhan.

PeriAzhvaar praises the sleeping lord at Kudanthai (Kumbakonam) as a King who was deft at juggling pots thrown in the air. He refers to the Lord as the young prince who infatuates the young and beautiful girls. He wants the Lord who once tore open the chest of Hiranyakashipu and who is now residing in a reclining posture at Thiru Kudanthai to come and wear the Kurukaththi flowers.

Karamadai Ranganatha

Ramanuja visited the temple on his way from Srirangam to Thiru Narayanapuram

Located about 30kms from Coimbatore on the Mettupalayam Highway is the Swayambu Ranganatha temple in Karamadai set in the backdrop of the blue mountain. Karikala Chozhan and Mysore King Krishnaraja Wodeyar are said to have made contributions to the temple. Thirumalai Nayakkar built the temple walls and several mandapams in and around the temple.

Railway Line and the temple

A British engineer wanted to construct a railway line near this temple that would have caused inconvenience to the temple and its festivals. Pleased with the sincere prayers of the devotees, Lord Ranganatha is said to have come, in a white horse, in the dreams of the British engineer, who then is said to have changed the direction of the railway line.

The happy British engineer donated a wooden white horse to the temple. To this day, the utsavar deity takes the street processions on this white horse.

The story
People in the region, who used to find their livelihood grazing and milking cows, found a particular cow returning without milk after a trip every morning. Surprised at this, they followed the cow and found that the cow stopped at a particular spot and let out the milk.

On digging the mound, they found Lord Ranganatha beneath.

Delighted at this occurrence, they built mandapams around this place and constructed the temple for Ranganatha who is seen here as a Swayambu Murthy – one who came out of the earth on his own. Unlike other Ranganatha temples, where he is in a reclining posture, only the moolavar deity’s face can be seen.

Thondaradipodi Azhvaar

Composed 55 of the most beautiful verses of the Naalayira Divya Prabhandham
Thirupalli Yezhuchi and Thiru Maalai in praise of Srirangam Lord Ranganatha

Born in Thiru Mandangudi in the Papanasam taluk in Kumbakonam district, Thondaradipodi Azhvaar, one of the last of the Azhvaars (he lived just before ThirupaanAzhvaar), was the most ardent devotee of Srirangam Lord Rangantha. So much so that he decided to sing praise only of the Srirangam Lord.

But what songs were they… some of the most beautifully composed paasurams of the Naalaayira Divya Prabhandham were the ones composed by Thondaradipodi, whose original name was Vipra Narayanan, signifying one who had not just mastered all the Vedas but who lived by the essence of the Vedas- ‘I surrender to Lord Emberamaanaar and am a slave of him’.

His early life
Thondaradi Podi Azhvaar lived his life in the ultimate service of Lord Ranganatha. He created a beautiful Nandavanam in Srirangam on the western side.

Every day, he would pluck flowers, make a garland and would hand it to the Lord. This is said to be the most ‘Uththamam’ of service to the Lord.

Living in Brahmacharyam

Vipra Narayanan wanted to live in Brahmacharyam through his life. Once, Deva Devi, a beautiful dancer, came to the Nandavanam. While everyone was attracted by her beauty, Vipra Narayanan remained engrossed in plucking the flowers, though she was standing next to him.

She was surprised to see a man who would not even turn to look at a beautiful lady within his sight. Her friends informed her that he was very committed in his service and that she will not be able to attract him.

Taking it as a challenge, Deva Devi decided to be with him and help him in his service. One evening, the place was struck by lightening and thunder and in the heavy rains that followed, she asked for permission to stay in his place that night. Having been pleased with her service, he permits her to stay. That night, she wins over him and is delighted to have finally attracted him.

Having won the challenge, she decides to leave him. By now, Vipra Narayanan is unable to live without her and offers his prayers to Lord Ranganatha to get her back.

One evening, Lord Ranganatha goes to her place and hands over 4 Golden Vattil and informs her that Vipra Narayanan asked him to hand it over to her. The next day, the king finds that the Vattils are missing from the temple. A maid working at Deva Devi’s place informs the king that she saw those Vattil’s in her place. Suspecting Vipra Narayanan’s role in this, the king locks him up in a Jail.

It is here that Vipra Narayanan realises his folly of having fallen prey to the beauty of a woman. He regretted the fact that he had lost thought of the Lord for a while and that what he is suffering now was a result of this weakness.

Thirupalli Yezhuchi and Thiru Maalai

Once released, Vipra Narayanan comes back, remains in thought of the Lord ever after and composes 2 of the best known Paasurams of the Divya Prabhandham - 45 verses of Thiru Maalai(872-916) as well as 10 verses of ThiruPalli Yezhuchi (917-926).

It is said that those who do not know Thiru Maalai will not really understand the Lord, his fame and his powers, such is its composition. Belief is that one who listens regularly to the Thiru Maalai will change, dramatically, for the good.

One of the specialities of the Thiru Maalai is that it is in a very simple language and can be easily understood by all. Listening to Thiru Maalai will instantly enlighten one. In his first paasuram, Thondaradi Podi says:

காவலிற் புலனை வைத்து , களிதன்னைக்
கடக்க பாய்ந்து
நாவலிட்டு உழிதர்கின்றோம் நமன்-தமர்
தலைகள் மீதே

மூவுலகு உண்டு உமிழ்ந்த முதல்வ
நின் நாமம் கற்ற

ஆவலிப்பு உடைமை கண்டாய்
அரங்க மா நகருளானே

It is said that Lord Ranganatha wanted to listen to the praise from his own son and hence wanted Thondaradipodi Azhvaar to sing praise of his fame. In his very first Paasuram, Thondaradipodi tells Lord Ranganatha of the fame behind his name (Lord’s).

Thondaradipodi has his feet on Yaama and says that he has sung praise of Lord Ranganatha himself and hence no foul can befall him and that Yama cannot take him (as he has Ranganatha’s blessings). He says he can exult and rejoice stepping on the head of Yama.

In the 2nd of his Thiru Maalai, Thondaradipodi says, "Lord of Srirangam, I would not even accept the opportunity to rule Indira Logam if you gave it to me. I would not want even that, if you deny me the opportunity and the joy of singing praise of you".

Through his 10 verses of Thiru Palli Yezhuchi, Thondaradipodi Azhvaar praises Srirangam Ranganatha and asks him to wake up and shower his blessings to all his devotees, now that the sun is up!!!!

Says Thondaradipodi, “The sun has risen, flowers have blossomed, everyone is ready before your sanctum. The elephant has come. The drums are beating. Please wake up, Lord Rangantha”

Thirumangai changes the direction of his famous Mathil

The last of the Azhvaars, Thirumangai, found the Nandavanam created by Thondaradipodi, coming in the way of the Western wall of the Srirangam temple. But such was the regard for Thondaradipodi and his creation of the beautiful garden that was abound with flowers all around, that Thirumangai altered the direction of the wall slightly and moved it away from the Nandavanam.

Lord offers Sri Vaikuntam, Thondaradipodi refuses
Srirangam Ranganatha offered Thondaradipodi a chance to go to SriVaikuntam, but he refused. He then offered him to go to the 14 logams(7+7 logams). But Thondaradipodi refused this too saying that this 3rd world – Srirangam- is where he will stay. Nothing can move him out of here.

In all times, this is the best place for one to be- to spend your Childhood, Youth, family life- for all of them. In and around the Srirangam temple, all of them can enjoy. Hence, I will not move out of here, said Thondaradipodi Azhvaar. And stayed here ever after.

Thondaradipodi Azhvaar Sannidhi is at the Southern Entrance(தெற்கு வாசல்) of the Srirangam temple on the right just before the Ranga Vilas Mandapam.

Vasanthotsavam Srirangam June 2009

Namperumal spends the evenings during this festival at the Nandavanam created by Thondaradipodi Azhavaar

Srirangam is the only Divya Desam where festivals are celebrated round the year (except for about 45days, there are festivals all through the year)

Celebrated in the Tamil Calendar month of Vaikasi, the 9 day Vasanthotsavam festival in Srirangam sees Namperumal, the Utsavar deity of Lord Ranganatha temple, enjoying the evenings in the beautiful Nandavanam(Garden) created by Thondaradi Podi Azhvaar.

The Nandavanam was so beautiful that when Thirumangai was in the process of building the now famous ‘Mathil’ of Srirangam, he slightly changed the direction of his construction on the Western side so as to not destroy any part of the Nandavanam.

Speciality of Vasantha Kaalam
Vasantha Kaalam was said to be a period that brought in a nice breeze in the evenings, flowers were said to blossom and a time that was neither too hot nor brought rains. It is believed that this stay amidst the breezy trees and in the middle of the tank in the Nandavanam gave Lord Namperumal a lot of happiness. Legend has it that one used to perform Jyothista Homam, said to help in reaching Swargam, in Vasantha Kaalam. Hence the belief is that one will be liberated from his curse if he drinks the sacred water of the Lord during the Vasantha Utsavam. For this reason, it is said that those who visit and offer their prayers to Lord Namperumal during this festival will find a new sense of happiness.

While in early years, Namperumal, stayed at the Ramanuja Sannidhi on the Eastern side of the temple, with passing of time, a new Vasantha Mandapam was created in the Nandavanam area, with a beautiful water pool in the tank around the Mandapam and it is here that spends the evenings during the Vasanthotsavam.

Evening Procession

Starting at 5pm every evening, Lord Namperumal takes the Arya Bhattal Vaasal- Garuda Mandapam route to reach the entrance of Chakkrathazhvaar Sannidhi. And dancing his way into the Nandavanam, Namperumal is all set for an Alankaaram at the Vasantha Mandapam by 6pm.

Daasi Community- Dance Performance
In centuries gone by, people belonging to the Daasi Community were honoured during the Vasanthotsavam with a garland of the Lord. They were believed to have lit the lamp and performed a special dance in front of the Lord at the Vasantha Mandapam.

The Daasi Community, that used to reside on the VOC Road in Srirangam, does not exist anymore and hence this special performance during the Vasanthotsavam does not take place these days.

(It is said that the Daasi Community still performs this special dance at the Puri Jagannath temple)

Diyva Prabhandham Goshti Chanting
After spending about 3 hours in the cool Vasantha Mandapam, Namperumal starts his way back to his sanctum at around 845pm. This is one of the only 5 festivals(others being 3 Brahmotsavam-Thai, Panguni and Chitrai- and Theppotsavam in the Tamil Calendar month of Maasi) at the Srirangam temple where Lord Namperumal enjoys the trip back to the sanctum sanctorum listening to the Divya Prabhandham chanting.

Special stop in front of the Thaayar Sannidhi

On his way back, Namperumal stops outside the Thaayaar Sannidhi for a glimpse of Ranganaayaki Thaayar. Sacred water and special Dal from the Thaayar Sannidhi is presented to the Lord and after the lighting of the ‘Nei Deepam’ of the Thaayar, Namperumal continues his procession through the 1000 pillared mandapam.

(After his visit to the Thaayar Sannidhi for the Serthi Festival during Panguni Uthiram, this is first trip to meet his consort. This time, it is only for a minutes and the Lord is allowed only a glimpse from outside!!!!)

At the entrance leading to the Garuda Sannidhi, Namperumal stops for about 5minutes to allow the devotees sing his praise. The Prabhandham chanting reaches a peak with the verses reverberating high positive energy among the devotees.

Story of Madhu Vanam
(While on the story on Nandavanam, there is another interesting episode relating to Madhu Vanam, said to be one of the favourite Vanams of Vaanara King Sugreeva. Around the time of Anjaneya’s return from Sri Lanka (after his visit in search of Sita), Madhu Vanam was destroyed completely by the Vaanaras. Interestingly, Sugreeva was not angered by this destructive act of his Vaanaras and knew that the Vaanaras had heard some happy news. It is said that Vaanaras get emotional on happy occasions and in this frame of mind, they go about conveying their happy emotions by patting/hitting hard at things they find.

The story goes that Sugreeva was happy that Lord Rama was protected from the Vaanaras as they directed their happiness at his favourite Madhu Vanam which was located in front of where Rama was residing at that time. Rama on hearing ‘Kanden Seethaiyai’ message from Hanuman is said to have given him a warm embrace thus almost placing him on equal terms with Sita Devi herself)
.

Last day of Vasanthotsavam
The Vasanthotsavam ends with the Horse Vaahanam Goshti of Namperumal across the four Chitrai Streets of Srirangam on the 9th day of the festival. Also, on the last evening, one can witness a Thirumanjanam at the Vasantha Mandapam.

Azhagar Chitrai Festival 2009

Azhagar draped in a Green Vastram entered the artificially pumped in water on the Northern banks of Vaigai earlier this month

Several lakh devotees stayed awake through the night to gather on the banks of the Vaigai to witness Lord Azhagar’s arrival, from Thallakulam, in his Golden Horse Vaahanam on Saturday (9th May) morning.

Immediately after his entry into the river, Kallazhagar met with Veera Raghava Perumal of Madurai at the specially erected mandapam on the river banks. The story goes that a priest had saved Lord Azhagar from a fire and asked for a wish, he asked for the first respects after Azhagar entered the Vaigai to be given to his(priest's)Lord Veera Raghava Perumal of Madurai.

Procession from Azhagar Koil to Madurai

Azhagar had begun his 20km procession from Thiru Maliruncholai, on the foot of the Azhagar hills on Thursday evening (7th May) at 7pm. He informed his guard Karuppanaswamy at the Eastern Tower of the temple, of his departure from the temple.

Ethir Sevai

For the next 24 hours, Azhagar stopped at one mandagapadi after another to the beating of drums, bursting of fire crackers and the dancing of the villagers as he made his way to Madurai.

The story goes that the people of Madurai were anxious for an early glimpse of Azhagar and that as a welcoming gesture of Azhagar into their city, they are said to have come in the direction of Azhagar Koil for a darshan of the Lord. Hence, this darshan of Maduriites along the Madurai- Azhagar Koil Road has now come to be called ‘Ethir Sevai’.

Andal's Garland Handed over to Azhagar at Thallakulam
After providing darshan along the Madurai Highway to thousands of devotees, Azhagar entered the Prasanna Venkatachalapathy temple at Thallakulam for the next significant event of the Azhagar Chitrai Thiruvizha.

At this temple, after an hour of special Alankara Thirumanjanam comprising of milk, sandal wood powder, curd and honey, Azhagar decked up in his new attire, accepted the garland worn by Andal of Srivilliputhur. Tthis was brought into Madurai by the priests of Srivilliputhur earlier in the day.

Kallazhagar is the only Divya Desam Lord other than Tirupathi Venkatachalapathy to adorn the garland worn by Andal.

Prospects for the next harvest season
It is an age old belief that the attire of the Lord on this Golden Horse Vahanam trip gives the villagers residing around Madurai an indication of the prospects for the next harvest season. Hence, this particular event is of great significance to the villagers who had gathered in at this temple and were looking out for positive signals from the Lord. This year Azhagar was draped in a beautiful Green vastram.

Lord leaves Thallakulam temple in his Garuda Vaahanam

At 2.15am on Saturday morning, Azhagar mounted on to the Golden Horse Vahanam and for the next 5 hours went around the jam packed streets (there was just enough place for one to stand!!!) of Madurai stopping on the way at specially constructed mandagapadis to give darshan to the devotees. The youngsters, who carried the Lord on this Golden Horse Vaahanam, did a commendable job right through the trip swinging and swaying to the right and left every few minutes drawing loud applause from the devotees.

Non Stop Sprinkling of water
One of the specialities of the entire procession of Azhagar from Thirumaliruncholai to the time he enters the Vaigai was the non stop sprinkling of water on the Lord - said to be a happy gesture to thank the Lord for fulfilling their prayers and for giving them a good harvest as well as an effort to keep him cool in the hot summer month of Chitrai.

Azhagar into the Vaigai
Just after 7am on Saturday (9th May) morning, Azhagar entered the Vaigai amidst loud chanting by the devotees. The story goes that a priest who saved the idol of Azhagar several centuries ago wanted Veera Raghava Perumal of Madurai to have the first honours after the Lord entered the Vaigai. To this day, this ritual is followed. Once into the Vaigai, Azhagar met with Veera Raghava Perumal, who had been waiting patiently in his silver Horse Vaahanam.

Having garlanded Veera Raghava Perumal on the banks of Vaigai, Azhagar proceeded on a 12km trip, along the banks of the Vaigai, to Vandiyur in the hot Saturday sun.

Village folk lore has it that Azhagar made his trip to Vaigai to attend the wedding of his sister Meenakshi (Amman) and angered at hearing the news of her already concluded marriage, refused to cross the river. However, according to the Vaishnavite legend, the purpose of Azhagar’s trip to Madurai was to liberate Manduka Maharishi from Durvasa’s curse and to provide him moksham.

A well thought out Economic Model
It must be noted here that the Meenakshi Thiruvizha(the Saivite Festival) was originally held in the Tamil Calendar month of Maasi and was shifted to Chitrai during the time of Thirumalai Nayakar.

Parthasarathy Bhattar of Azhagar Koil says that earlier Azhagar used to enter the Vaigai at Thenoor, a village west of Madurai. “It was during Thirumalai Nayakar’s time, about 400 years ago, that this too was moved to Madurai.”

Interestingly, there is said to be an economic reason as well behind these moves. Wanting to make this the biggest festival of Madurai, Thirumalai Nayakar was of the belief that the move to bring the big Saivite festival alongside the Chitrai Azhagar Vaishnavite festival would make the Madurai economy flourish and thrive.

Several centuries later, the vision of Thirumalai Nayakar has definitely come true. This certainly is by far the single biggest festival of Madurai and the roads of the city were buzzing with brisk activity over the fortnight of the Chitrai Thiruvizha with shops and stalls making their best business of the year. Exhibitions and fairs also marked the Chitrai Thiruvizha.

Dasavatharam Display
After his trip to Vandiyur, Azhagar made his way to ‘Thenoor Mandapam’ where, on his Golden Garuda Vahanam, the Lord enacted the scene of liberating Manduka Maharishi from his curse and providing moksham to the rishi. Later, on Sunday (10th May) night, Azhagar delighted the devotees by displaying his Dasavatharam forms at the Rama Rayar Mandapam.

Finally on Tuesday morning, Azhagar went on a ‘Poo Pallakku’ to Karuppana Swamy Koil and from there made his way back via Appan Tirupathi to reach his abode at Thirumaliruncholai on Wednesday(13th May) morning bringing to end another year of Chitrai Thiruvizha, the biggest festival of Madurai.

Tail piece:
While the biggest, oldest and the most popular event of the 9 day annual Azhagar Chitrai Thiruvizha in Madurai, that of Kallazhagar, of Thiru Maliruncholai, dancing his way into the Vaigai on his Golden Horse Vaahanam, took place in a grand style with lakhs of devotees queuing up on all the four sides of the Vaigai, including on the road bridge above, (some were even seen hanging from the pillars beneath the road bridge!!! ) what was not so pleasant was the pumping of (artificial) water into the river through a tanker a day before the event (Yes, water was released from the Vaigai dam, but it was only a trickle). Old timers in Madurai talk of the delightful times when Lord Azhagar used to enter the river with knee deep water across the entire stretch that made this event truly special and a treat to watch.

Perhaps this is symbolic of the times we live in…
