Located on East Coast Road, about 40 kms South of Madras and 1 km North of Crocodile bank is the Nithya Kalyana Perumal Koil at Thiruvidanthai, a temple praised by Thiru Mangai Azhvaar in his Periya Thirumozhi verse.
Brahmachaari Lord getting married here
Lord Narayana came here as a Brahmachaari, answering the prayers of Kaalava Rishi and married 360 young daughters of the Rishi in one year. On the last day, he is said to have merged them into one and given darshan with Goddess on his left. Hence the Goddess here is called ‘Agila Valli Thaayaar’. Having married one girl a day here at this temple, the Lord is called ‘Nithya Kalyana Perumal’.
Being the place where the Lord married every day of the year, it is believed to be a very auspicious temple relating to marriage. Legend has it that unmarried people will immediately find their life partner if they visit this place and offer their prayers to Nithya Kalyana Perumal. The temple priests confirm that they have been a witness to the Lord answering instantly the prayers of unmarried men and women and their parents.
Unique Posture of the Lord
At this temple, one finds the Lord in a unique standing posture facing East. While one leg is on the ground, the other is on Adhisheshan and his wife. And he is seen balancing Goddess Agila Valli on his left thigh.
Bali's penance and Aadhi Varaha providing Darshan
Asuras wanted to take on the Devas and sought the help of Bali, son of Asura Meganathan. Bali, known for his fairness, asked them not to fight the Devas without a cause and refused to support the Asuras. Without Bali’s participation, the Asuras were soundly defeated. The Asuras surrendered to Bali and once again requested him to fight for them. Pushed by the Asuras, Bali agreed and under his leadership the Asuras won.
Bali is said to have undertaken penance here at Thiruvidanthai to atone the sin of fighting the Devas without a just cause. Pleased with his prayers, Lord Aadhi Varaaha is believed to have appeared before him and provided Moksham to him at this place.
Chozha Kings and Thiruvidanthai temple
Raja Raja Chozha celebrated a 7day festival in Aavani and a 9day festival in Panguni. He also fed a number of Brahmins here. Vijaya Rajendra Chozha donated this entire village to the Thiruvidanthai Lord.
Thiru Mangai Azhvaar's Periya Thiru Mozhi Praise
Thiru Mangai Azhvaar in his Periya Thiru Mozhi verses refers to the 'daughter's' yearning for the Lord. And how she has been having sleepless nights thinking of the handsome Lord all the time. And the fact she has been uttering only the Lord's name every time she speaks.
The Name Thiru Vidanthai
This place is also called Nithya Kalyana Puri, Sri Puri and Varaaha Puri. As the Lord merged 360 girls into one and appeared with the Goddess on his left on the last day, this place is called Thiru- Idanthai (Thiru-Goddess, Idanthai-left side), which in course of time became ThiruVidanthai.

There are a number of buses from Adyar and Tiruvanmiyur bus stand that go to Kovalam and Mahabalipuram.

Hi Prabhu,
ReplyDeleteIts a nice piece of information, it ll be really helpful who wish to visit the temple.
I'm planning to visit the temple this weekend.
Can u pls tellme from Chennai central which bus number I can catch as I'm new to chennai & I dnt know tamil.
venu
Sir,
ReplyDeleteThanks for writing in.
It is best take a bus to Adyar or Tiruvanmiyur from Chennai Central(Bus No. 1).
From Adyar or Tiruvanmiyur bus stand, there are a number of buses to Thiru Vidanthai- 588,589 and 599.
The other option is to take the MRTS train opposite Central station. You can get down at Thiruvanmiyur Station. YOu can walk down about 10mts from the station to catch the bus to Thiru Vidanthai.
Prabhu
Prabhu,
ReplyDeleteThanks for the info, I have successfully visited the place with god's grace.
I went to Parrys Busstand from chennai central & took PP19 & travelled to Kovalam.
Yes from Adayar there are no of buses r there, while coming i came in tht route.
Can you tell me, Are there any buses from KOYAMBEDU to Thiru vidanthai? it ll be helpful as my friend wants to travel.
venu
Best Option is for him to take the Mahabalipuram/Pondy bound(via ECR) mofussil bus and get down at Thiru Vidanthai. That will be fast.
ReplyDeleteLocal buses will stop in a lot of places, will take time
Prabhu
Thanks for the information. I am going this week end. Will share the experience on my return.

Madam,
ReplyDeleteThanks for mailing.
As mentioned earlier, the Kalyana Utsavam will not be possible before week 1/2 of May.
The Temple does not have accomodation facilities/Guest House...as it away from Madras in a village.
A good place for you to stay(both safety and economical) could be the retiring room at the railway station.

Hi Prabhu,
ReplyDeleteThis is really good initiative. I just had a glance on this site the first time, glad to see your never tiring response..
Here is my question: I have planned to this temple on 19th Feb, my Fiancee and I are coming. I read your previous post, that both should nt come together. Is it fine if we do pooja's seperately or for me alone? when she is just accompanying me.
Please let me know, as my travel is planned, we will be starting the next day.. hence is my question.
Sir,
ReplyDeleteYes, you can do pooja separately and she can do pooja separately.
You can come back together once you are married.
Prabhu
Hi Prabhu,
ReplyDeleteI will be coming to temple with my wife on this saturday. I will be reaching central by 10:30. I would like to finish the darshan in the morning session. Can you please let me know fastest route from chennai central.
Thanks for the help in advance.
If you are reaching Central by 1030am, it would be difficult to finish darshan in the first half.
ReplyDeleteBy bus, it will take at least 1 1/2hours (from Parrys Corner/Broadway bus terminus-which is 1km from central station)since it is about 40kms away.
By a private taxi, it may take at least an hour depending on the traffic that morning especially in the santhome/adyar area.
But if you are keen to finish that morning, car may be an option to look at - he can try to drive you in 1hour for you to reach the temple by 11.30am. car will cost a minimum of Rs.650 (which seems to be the minimum charge for private cabs here)
If you so wish I can give you the contact numbers of a couple of cabs.
Prabhu

Hello Prabhu Sir,
ReplyDeleteExcellent Work on your part. We just planned to go to the Temple and your information is very useful to us. 1. can we get the pooja items from outside or we should buy in the temple? 2. What is fee for doing marriage pariharam? 3.What is procedure to be followed after the pooja?
1. Better to get from the temple itself. It is not expensive and easily available.
ReplyDelete2. request you to call the number mentioned above in the story and share your pariharam details for them to revert.
3. After the pooja, you will have to go around the temple 9 times.
After the wedding, you may come together with your spouse.
Hai prabhu,
ReplyDeleteThank you very much for providing this useful information..

Sir/ Madam,
ReplyDeleteYou can do Kalyana Pooja on any day.
Once you reach the temple, you can buy the pooja items/garlands there and Sriram Bhattar will guide you regarding the formalities.
If you are referring to Thiru Kalyanam for the Lord, then that is done Monday-Thursday ( not done on Saturday/Sunday).
For (Prarthana) Kalyana Pooja, any day this month or in October is fine to do.

After visiting the Thiruvidanthai temple, you can carry on with whatever other plans you have.
There is no connection between the two temples that you have mentioned. You can visit as per you convenience.

Hi Prabhu,
ReplyDeleteAll these information are worth reading.
If you could help me in knowing the procedures for the kalayana pooja and fares for that would be grateful.
Also is there any particular date for doing this pooja.
Any day of the week is fine for Kalyana Pooja.
ReplyDeleteReach the temple, buy the pooja items at the entrance and meet the priest.
He will tell you the process - it is a simple process that will not take more than 30minutes.
No fare!! you may have to buy archanai ticket...
Prabhu
Hi..this Saturday i had very good darshan...
ReplyDeleteThanks for the info..
I would like to add few fares for ppl are plan to go.
The pooja item is available outside it cost - Rs100/-
Kalyana pooja - Rs 20/-
Archanai Rs2/-
Hi..
ReplyDeleteI have done the pooja recently and kept the garland in sun light to dry but due to recent rain...the garland is wet....
In this rainy season i am not sure whether i can dry it and keep it to take it back to temple...
How important is it to return the used garland after wedding?
Hi,
ReplyDeleteLet me know whether this saturday 19/11/2011 is good for doing Kalyana pooja or let me know the best day to do that.
Yes Saturday is fine.
ReplyDeletePrabhu
Sir/Madam,
ReplyDeleteDo not worry about the Wet Garland, offering sincere prayers is more important.

Shri Prabhu,
ReplyDeleteCould you please let me know whether parents can perform Nithya Kalyana Pooja on behalf of their son/daughter to be got married, if either of them (son /daughter) are not able to visit the temple immediately.
Shri. Prabhu,
ReplyDeleteCan parents visit the temple and offer pooja on behalf of their son/daughter praying for his/her early marriage?
Srinivasan
It will obviously be a little bit of a compromise because as you may have read above, it is best for the individual to make it.
ReplyDeleteBut if there is no way of the unmarried individual making it, then the option you have stated is fine.
Prabhu

ReplyDeleteFrom Thiruvanmiyur Terminus, take Bus No. 588/599 /other buses going towards Mahabalipuram, ask for Thiruvidanthai Nithya Kalyana Perumal temple stop.
The bus will stop in front of the temple.( it will take about 30-45mts to reach the temple from Thiruvanmiyur terminus- Take the Express/AC bus)

Can the kalyanam prayers be done on behalf of our daughter even though she is not present with us at the temple? Also is the kalyana pujai possible at all times on the 6th and 7th of Feb? Or is there a specific time we need to come?
ReplyDeleteIf it is possible, it would be good for the daughter to come and do the Kalyana Pooja.
ReplyDeleteHowever, if it is not possible at all for her to come and do, then it may be okay for you to do it on her behalf.
6am-12noon and 3pm-8pm would be fine to do.

Take a bus that goes to Kovalam from there crossing the OMR.
ReplyDeleteThat would be the easiest route.
Or you could come to Tambaram. Take the medavakkam-sholinganallur road to reach ECR. From there, the temple will be about 10kms.

ReplyDeleteHi Prabhu,
ReplyDeleteThanks for your valuable inputs about the temple and for your guidance in reaching there.
I am recently married and i am scheduled myself to visit temple on April-1st Sunday.
Now i have a few doubts:
1. Is there any compulsion that we have to wear our Marriage dress ( white dress)
2. Can we able to perform pooja on Sunday
3. What are the timings of the temple.
Thanks for your support.
With Cheers,
Sreekanth
1. Not Compulsory to wear marriage dress
ReplyDelete2. Yes possible on Sunday
3. 6am-12noon, 3pm-8pm

Hi Prabhu,
ReplyDeleteI have a doubt:
My wife visited the temple last year before marriage and on her wish only this time we both are planning to visit the temple.
But her concern is that she doesn't has the garland what she wear at the time of last visit, is there any compulsion to drop that garland in temple this time. If so, what is the alternative for her to do?
Waiting for your valuable suggestion.
Thanks in advance..
With Cheers,
Sreekanth
The two of you can visit the temple together and offer your thanks to the Lord and Goddess.
ReplyDelete( Not having the old garland is fine)

It will take about 45minutes-1hour from Thiruvanmiyur bus stand.

Hi, prabhu. I heard sum1 saying that. While going to temple we should not eat r drink in between temple and house. We must eat r drink anything only before starting from house r after reaching house only ? Pls guide me. Thanks
ReplyDeleteThat point is not necessarily related to this temple.
ReplyDeleteHowever, when you are visiting a(any) temple, it would be good to be thinking of the Lord and offering our thoughts and prayers on him instead of (on)our food.
Prabhu
Hi Prabhu, Normally in May and June month, Thiru Kalynam doesn't happen for some days due to Brahmohtsam and other poojas. Please confirm what is the possible date so that i can visit to temple to do Kalyana pooja. Your Support very much appreciated in this regard.
ReplyDeleteKalyana Pooja can be done on any day.
ReplyDelete( Thiru Kalyanam is different)
You may be referring to Kalyana Pooja to be done by you. It should be fine to do that any day of your visit.
Prabhu
HI..Prabhu,we are planning to go to that temple next week 11.05.12,Please confirm me that Kalyana pooja is possible in that time??

ReplyDeleteHi,
ReplyDeletemy fiance is from a different religion..is it ok if he can cum to the temple with me.
Thanks
Sri
In several vishnu temples, people from other religion may not be allowed inside the Sanctum.
ReplyDeleteAlso, as has been stated above, before marriage, it would be good to visit the temple alone and not together.
After marriage, couples may visit the temple together (not earlier) thanking the Lord for his blessings.
Thank You
Prabhu

ReplyDeleteSir/ Madam,
ReplyDeletePrior to marriage, one is expected to go to the temple alone/ with parents to do Kalyana Pooja.
The priest at the temple will guide you regarding the Kalyana Pooja.
After marriage, you can visit the temple with your spouse. But do not go together ( other than with your parents) to the temple before the marriage.
Kalyana Pooja is to be done individually.
Prabhu
Thanks Prabhu for ur reply.
ReplyDeleteU said that me & my lover should not go together to this temple. Can we go together just to worship the god without doing any poojas?
Thanks Prabhu for ur reply.
ReplyDeleteU said that me & my lover should not go together to this temple. Can we go together just to worship the god without doing any poojas?
Sir/Madam,
ReplyDeleteAs far as this temple goes, especially in reference to unmarried people visiting and praying to get married, you should go alone.
In any case, it would be wise, as a general rule, not to visit temples together before marriage.
Prabhu
Hi,
ReplyDeleteIs this temple on the way to Thirunallar? Does it use the same route. I plan to be in Karaikal then proceed to this temple the next day on my way back to T-Nagar. Is it advisable?
Thanks.
Hi,
ReplyDeleteI just read that you mentioned that no Kalyana Pooja will be done is June. Is it true or have I misread it?
June is when I will be in Tamilnadu. Kindly advise.
thanks,
I Prayed lord Perumal today. Purchased poja items from outside (cost around Rs 80). Archana sheet inside the temple (cost Rs 22). I reached the temple at 8.30 am. it was less crowded during that time. slowly the number of people reaching the temple was increased. You can reach nithya kalyana perumal thiruvidanthai temple by bus on the following ways.
ReplyDelete1. CMBT -> Kovalam-> share auto (Rs 7) -> temple.
2. Thiruvanmayur --> Kovalam-> share auto (Rs 7) -> temple.
3. tnager---> kallapakkam ---> Kovalam-> share auto (Rs 7) -> temple.
4. solinganallur --> kallapakkam ---> Kovalam-> share auto (Rs 7) -> temple.
5. solingallur signal ---> Water Tank (on the way to ECR)--> kallapakkam ---> Kovalam-> share auto (Rs 7) -> temple.
6. magapallipuram busses will also go to the temple but i don't know route.
This are the bus routes which i came to know while travelling to the temple.
I wish all of you to get the blessing from the god and get married soon.
Observation:
1. Reach the temple early. No hotels near by.
2. There may be a chance of missing your chepals in the flower shop, be careful.

It may be a good option to board Mahabalipuram bound express bus from the 100feet Road Vadapalani/Kodambakkam Junction.
ReplyDeleteYou can get down at Thiru Vidanthai in front of the temple complex.
There are local buses from T. Nagar bus stand to Mahabalipuram.
That would be another option.
By train, you can reach Tambaram Station from Kodambakkam and then take a bus to Mahabalipuram via East Tambaram/Medavakkam High Road route to get down at Thiru Vidhanthai.
