Saint poets Azhvaars composed verses in Tamil and revitalized the religious spirit sparking off a renewal of devotional worship referred to as the Bhakti movement. The Azhvaars visited temples and sung praises in the name of Vishnu. Such temples have come to be known as Divya Desams. The compilation of the verses (known as Paasurams) is the revered Naalayira Divya Prabandam(4000 in all). There are 108 Divya Desams in all, 40 of these temples are in the Chola region (Trichy-Tanjore-Kumbakonam belt).
You will find that in all these temples, Vishnu is represented in one of three postures – reclining, standing or seated posture. Detailed version on each of these temples features separately in the blog - Link provided below.

1. Sarangapani(Thiru Kudanthai) Temple (http://prtraveller.blogspot.in/2007/10/108-divya-desam-thiru-kudanthai.html)
One can start off with the Aravamudhan Sarangapani temple in the heart of Kumbakonam town. This temple has one of the tallest temple towers for a Divya Desam (150ft) after Srirangam, Thiru Kovilur and Srivilliputhur. Also, after Srirangam(11) and Tirupathi(10), this temple has the maximum number of Azhavaars (7 of them here) singing praise of the Lord. Another highlight of the temple is that it is the home to one of the biggest temple chariots in Tamil Nadu. It is at this temple that the Vaishnavite savant Natha Muni got the inspiration to compile the works of the famed 4000 verses of the Azhvaars, after listening to the Tamil hymn 'Aravamudhe' composed by Nammalwar.
One of the mandapams at the Sarangapani temple is believed to have been built in 7th Century AD by the famous Pallava King Mahendra Varma. This temple was later renovated by the famous Vijayanagara King Krishnadevaraya.
The main sanctum has been conceived like a chariot with wheels drawn by horses and elephants and is truly a splendid sight to watch. A visit to this temple, it is believed, will help get rid of one’s past sins, just as a trip to Kasi in the North, would.
The Chitrai Chariot(April-May) procession of the Sarangapani temple is a special occasion at the temple (http://prtraveller.blogspot.in/2017/06/sarangapani-koil-thiru-kudanthai.html)

2. Oppiliappan Temple
About 6 kms from Kumbakonam off the Kaaraikal road near ThiruNageswaram, it is believed that Lord Srinivasa here has similar powers to that of the Lord at Tirupathi and hence those who are unable to go to Tirupathi visit this temple. The Lord here is considered as the brother of Tirupathi Lord Srinivasa. This is the only Divya Desam where prasadams do not contain salt and hence the name ‘Oppiliappan’(Lord without Salt). Legend has it that any one bringing salt within this temple will go to hell. Some of the inscriptions at this temple date back to the period of Rajendra Chola, the great Chola king.
Local town buses ply between Kumbakonam and Oppilappan Temple.

3.Nachiyar Temple in Thiru Naraiyur
Located about 10kms from Kumbakonam, the Nachiyar temple at Thiru Naraiyur is our next stop. This temple can be reached easily from Oppiliappan temple. Every year in the month of Margazhi, there is a one of its kind procession where Lord Srinivasa is taken out on a stone Garuda mount. The mount is said to grow exponentially in weight as it is carried out of its sanctum. While 4 people are enough to carry him out of his Sannadhi, the mount increases in weight as it comes out of every layer and by the time the Lord is out on to the last layer of the temple, it requires as many as 64 people to carry him. This is an experience not to be missed at this temple.
This is a temple of special significance for Lord Garuda and he is said to be very powerful here. At this divya desam, Naachiyaar (Goddess) gets the place of primary importance, unlike most other divya desams, where the main deity is the Lord. Another feature is that the idols of all the 108 divya desams can be seen here.

4.Thirucherai Saranatha Perumal
The Saranathan temple in Thirucherrai is 5 kms away from Nachiyar Temple and is close to Kudaivasal town.
This is the only divya desam where the Lord provides darshan along with five Goddesses(Sridevi, Bhooma Devi, Neela Devi, Maha Lakshmi and SaraNayaki).

5. Nathan Koil Nandipura Vinnagaram
The Nathan temple in Nandhipura Vinnagaram is about 5kms from Kumbakonam near Korukkai/Pateeswaram. Legend has it that Nandi performed penance here to seek atonement for insulting the Dwarapalakas of Vishnu and hence the name Nandipura Vinnagaram. It is also believed that Pallava King Nandivarma built this place and also created the temple here. An interesting feature is that Vishnu, who originally faced the east, turned westward to look at the spectacle of King Sibi saving a bird. An image of Nandi can be seen on one of the walls.
Lack of Attention from Vaanamaalai Mutt
This is under the administration of Vaanamaalai Mutt but despite the terrific commitment of the Bhattar, who does the daily rituals without fail even when there are no devotees, this is quite a neglected temple- something the Vaanamaalai Mutt must pay immediate attention to. Lack of attention from the Mutt has meant that that this temple, unlike Nanguneri Divya Desam, does not attract too many devotees, even on weekends. And add to this, the poorly paid bhattar, and it makes a very sad scene.

6. Pulla Boothangkudi- Jataayu Moksham
From Kumbakonam, off Swami Malai, on the Kumbakonam -Thiruvaikaavur road, is Pulla Boothangkudi. This Divya Desam’s legendary tale dates back to the time of Ramayana. The Eagle King, Jatayu, an old friend of King Dasharatha (father of Raama) had fought a valiant battle trying to rescue Sita from Raavana, before the Lankan king cut off its wings. It is believed that parental curse will go away if one visits this place as Raama, who had not performed the last rites for his father, made up by performing his (Jataayu’s) obsequies, thus giving moksham to the Bird. In the Raamayana, this episode is referred to as the death of the 2nd father.
This is the only Divya Desam where Raama is in reclining posture and can be seen with all his ornaments and four hands. Interestingly, Goddess Sita is not seen with the Lord, as this temple relates to the time when Raama is separated from her.
The priest believes that many devotees have got employment after visiting Yoga Narasimhar (a separate sannadhi within the temple), so much so that the devotees have named it the Udyoga Narasimhar. This temple is administered by Ahobila Mutt.
This temple has been beautifully redone and has an air of freshness to it, especially with Gopal Bhattar’s friendly attitude towards devotees and his detailed explanation of the history of the temple.

7.Adhanur Ranganatha Perumal http://prtraveller.blogspot.in/2010/04/athanur-divya-desam.html
This temple is very close to Pulla Bhoothangkudi. Legend has it that Kamadhenu, the sacred cow (she grants all wishes), had undertaken penance here and hence you would find sculptures of Kamadhenu and her daughter Nandini here. It is believed that Lord Anjaneya stayed here for a few days on his way back from Sri Lanka to Ayodhya.

8.Kapisthalam – Gajendra Moksham
Located about 10kms from Kumbakonam on the Thiruvayaru road, this is the only Divya Desam where Lord Vishnu provides Darshan to two animals- Crocodile and Elephant. Legend has it that Vishnu, on his Garuda Vaahanam (a vehicle of the Lord), rescued Elephant (King) Gajendra from the clutches of the Crocodile(the Asura) on the banks of the river by hurling his Chakra at the Crocodile. This episode is known as Gajendra Moksham and is enacted every year during the month of Panguni (March-April). This is one of the ‘Pancha Krishna Kshetrams’ (5 Krishna Kshetrams).
Temple in Terrible state
This temple is under the administration of AG Lakshmana Moopanar family and is currently in a terrible state, completely neglected. It is a wonder how the Bhattar is managing the day to day affairs, with meager monthly salary. All the devotees who visit this Divya Desam have wondered as to why the Moopanar family is not doing something to renovate the temple, which has a rich history.

10. Kandiyur Hara Saabha Vimochana Perumal
The next divya desam on this route is Kandiyur, about 3 kms from Tiruvaiyaru on the Thanjavur road. The deity here is called ‘Hara Saabha Vimosana Perumal’ as Lord Shiva got cleansed of Brahmma’s curse (Hara is another name of Shiva). This temple is a ‘Pancha Kamala Kshetram’(Lord Kamalanathan, Goddess Kamalavalli, Kamala Pushkarani, Kamala Vimaanam and Kamala Kshetram). The place is called Kandiyur in memory of Lord Shiva, also known as Kandeeswarar, who got salvation from the Brahmma’s curse.
Thirumangai Azhvaar’s only verse on Kandiyur goes thus “பிண்டியார் மண்டை ஏந்தி....கண்டியூர் அரங்கம் மெய்யம் ” meaning - Vishnu rid the curse on Shiva, who went begging everywhere with Brahmma’s skull as a begging bowl. Other than worshipping the Lord, is there a way to salvation” sings Thirumangai Azhvaar .

11. Thanjai Maa Mani Temple
The final stop on this Divya Desam journey is at three temples within a km of each other on the banks of Vennar River on the outskirts (North) of Thanjavur. These three temples together make this (one) divya desam. Legend has it that Lord Garuda flew over here and still guards this place. Hence it is believed that there are no snake threats here. The temples date back to the period of the Nayaks of Madurai. The three temples are administered by the Thanjavur palace

Hello Prabhu.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for a detailed blog. I have a couple of questions about the temple visit since I plan to take my parents alongwith who are elderly. Are the temples in this region easily accessible? Hoping none are on a hill or have too many steps to be climbed before reaching the main garbha gudi i.e. perumal's sannidhi? Also can all these temples be covered completely in 2 days if I take a taxi?
Thanks in advance, pls. email me at vmalini5@gmail.com
Yes, they are easily accessible if you take a taxi.
ReplyDeleteNo Hill temples. Not too many steps to climb in any of these temples.

Thanks,

Good to hear this, Madam.
ReplyDeletePrabhu
Hello Mr.Prabhu,
ReplyDeleteYour blogs on the Divya Desams have been extremely helpful by providing insightful details. Recently we visited Tanjore, Kumbakonam, Thiru Nangur, Mayavarum, Thiru Nagai, Sirkazhi/Chidambaram and covered 33 divya desams (could not have darshan at Thiru kapisthalam) in 4 days. We went with Saravanan for Cab services as suggested by you and encouraging feedback from other devotees.
Though I had made a detailed plan for this trip based on your inputs and also from other sites, I didn't really need to use it. Saravanan assured me on Day 1 that he would cover 34 Divya desam and kept his word. Not only that, we could visit additional 20+ other famous temples during the trip. What we liked about Saravanan was his passion/devotion in giving the details of some of the famous temples, and in a way played the role of guide as well.
We took the help of Sathish (through Madhav Bhattar of Thiruvellankulam Annan Koil) during our trip without whom we wouldn't have covered Thiru Nangur divya desams to a plan. We stayed at Kumbakonam for the entire trip. Perhaps, we could have covered few more temples if we stayed one night at Mayavaram. Indeed, a very satisfactory trip for me and my family.
Thank you for your very useful blogs and help to devotees. Appreciate it
Venkatesan
Good to hear.

Adiyen,
ReplyDeleteThanks for such a detailed account.
I'm planning a trip to visit the Divya Desams in the Thanjavur/ Kumbakonam belt between 29-31st July (I'll be travelling on the 28th night by train from Chennai to either of Thanjavur or Kumbakonam, whichever you recommend as a better starting point for covering the Divya Desams). On 31st afternoon, I wish to travel to Kalyanapuram and on 1st morning/afternoon travel back to Chennai (preferably by the Cholan express).
Would it be possible for you to suggest an itinerary for the same? I'll be travelling solo (in case it helps you provide a plan accordingly).

I talked to the Bhattacharya of Sirkazhi and Annan koil who had suggested to take a guide with us from Annan koil and from what they said we find that 1pm to 5pm no temple will be open. therefore we advanced our time by an hour, starting from Chennai ADYAR at 6 am. Hope with your best wishes we would be cowering all diva desams in and around Kumbakonam and Sirkali, thanks in advance, Raghavan
ReplyDeleteSir,

If you are going up to Varagur and if you are doing it by car, you may also visit Senthalai Anantha Padmanabhaswamy Temple(http://prtraveller.blogspot.in/2014/01/anantha-padmanabhaswamy-senthalai.html) - This is just under 15kms from Varagur.
ReplyDeleteand
Koviladi Appa Kudathan Divya Desam (12kms from Senthalai) and Anbil Divya Desam ( about 10kms via short cut new bridge)
(Varagur, Senthalai, Koviladi and Anbil are close to each)
+
the next day:
You may visit Gandharvakottai ( http://prtraveller.blogspot.in/2014/06/kothandarama-temple-gandharvakottai.html) - 30kms towards Pudukottai
and

You can cover Gandharvakottai and Malayadipatti in one half of a day

Dear Prabhu sir,
ReplyDeletewith your good wishes and prayers we completed the tour of DD in kumbakonam and Sirkazhi.
The guidance and timings given by you was very useful and precise. Thanks. Now we 4 sr. citizens wish to go to D/D of Malai Desam and Pandiya Desam and Guruvayoor. Kindly guide us with similar guidance as to which place we need to fix as our center and the timings to be followed by us during this tour. We wish to go by train from Chennai and go to Guruvayoor first. We have 4 days at our disposal Also suggest whether Oct.3rd week will be ideal for the trip. Thanks in advance. Raghavan
Kerala Divya Desams:
ReplyDeleteDAY 1
From Guruvayoor, you may visit Thiru Naavai and Thiru Vithuvakodu ( near Pattambi) both on the Shoranur- Mangalore rail route
By Car, this will take less than one hour from Guruvayoor.
After finishing Thiru Naavai and Thiru Vithuvakodu, you may take a train from Thiru Naavai or Pattambi or Shoranur to Kochi for the 1st night stay at kochi).
If you start back from thiru Navai at 11am/12noon, you should be able to reach Kochi by 3/4pm.
DAY 1 EVENING
If you use a cab at Kochi, you can visit the two DDs around Kochi - Thiru Kaatkarai and Thiru Moozhikalam on the 1st evening.
You may stay at Kochi on the first night:
DAY 2 MORNING
From Kochi, you may take an early morning train to Chengannur Railway Station ( say 4am/5am train)
There, you may use the cab services of Mohan @ 99466 73868 to cover 6 Divya Desams ( Thiru Puliyoor, Thiru Chittaru, Aranmula, Thiruvan Vandur, Thiruvalla and Changanacheri)- a number of late night / early morning trains ply on that route from Kochi.
Since the temples open at 430am/5am, it would be good to reach the first temple by 5am ( Thiru Puliyoor) on the 2nd morning so you will be able to cover these 6 temples by 1030am/11am.
From Chenganacheri, you can take a train / bus to Trivandrum after 12noon/1pm after lunch - you will be able to reach Trivandrum in 3-4 hours
( buses are very fast on that route and there are some nice deluxe buses)
DAY 2 EVENING
You may visit Thiru Ananthapuram DD on Day 2 evening.
DAY 3 MORNING
On day 3 morning, you can take a train from Trivandrum to Marthandam. From Marthandam you may take an auto or bus to Thiru Vattaru
(I can organise an auto service there to pick you from Marthandam and to drop you back at Marthandam)
After that you can visit Thiruvan Parisaram near Nagercoil on the 3rd morning before 1130am.
DAY 3 EVENING
If interested you may visit Suchindram/ Kanyakumari on 3rd evening and you may take the KK express back to Madras.
Or you may visit Thiru Kurungudi and Vanamamalai and return the next day.
PS: I visited all these Divya Desams by bus/ train...
Can organise Cab in any of these places if you so wish.

Dear Prabhu,
ReplyDeleteThank you for your very informative blog. We contacted Saravanan to show us all the divyadesams in chola nadu. The testimonials were true; he was knowledgeable, had a lot of experience in these temple tours and especially in divyadesam tours, speaks Hindi/Tamil, and charged reasonably. I would definitely recommend Saravanan.
Regards,
Chakri
Dear Prabhu,
ReplyDeleteNamaskaram!
It's really great to see your service over here.. Perumal anugraham paripoornamaga kittatum!!!
I am going to travel from Kanchipuram on this Friday 25th march morning by our own car.. Could you please guide us on making our plan.. Sorry to bother you.. Also let me know self drive works out or better to keep a local driver or guide? If I start Friday morning I guess I could reach in 5 to 6 hours by afternoon.. I could stay till Sunday morning.. I want to visit including thirunangur divya desam, thiruchitra koodam, kapisthalam, kumbakonam temples..
Many thanks
A Fly over is being constructed at the railway gate at Panruti. Hence there is a long diversion a few kms ahea d of Panruti on the Vikravandi – Kumbakonam Highway. Given this and also the fact that you are likely to reach Kumbakonam only after 12noon ( which means you will not be able to visit any temple till 4pm), here is a suggested plan:
ReplyDeleteFriday morning:7am-10am
Kanchi- Chengalpet- Tindivanam- Pondy-Cuddalore- Chidambaram : approx 180kms
( the road is good through this entire stretch. Even at a steady speed you should be able to reach in 3hours. Cuddalore – Chidambaram : You can take the new ECR by-pass without going to Bhuvanagiri. This has reduced the distance by well over 15kms and is a beautiful stretch to drive)
Chidambaram – 10am-11am
Sirkazhi Divya Desam: 1130am-12noon
Nangur Divya Desam : 12.30pm- 530pm
( Talk to Guide Mohan in advance on 94863 03430 – either today/tomorrow and tell him that you are likely to reach Annan Koil by 12.30pm. And check with him if he can take you around in your car to all the Nangur DDs from 12.30pm so he can talk to all the Bhattars in advance. He should also be able to organise temple Thaligai/ Lunch)
Friday Night Stay
You can talk to Madhava Bhattar, Annan Koil @ 94898 56554 to see if you can stay in the (guest) house opposite the temple for the night of Friday.
Saturday Morning
7am : Indhalur
8am: Sirupuliyur near Kollumangudi(Bala Ranganatha)
9am: Therezhendur ( There is a short cut from Sirupuliyur to Therezhendur – Under 15kms via Kollumangudi- Komal)
10am: Oppiliappan
11am: Thiru Cherai
12noon: Nachiyar Koil
(You can have Thaligai at Therezhendur /Sirupuliyur / Nachiyar Koil)
You may stay at Andavan Ashram @ Kumbakonam Just behind Sarangapani Temple. Good rooms are available. Number @ 0435 240 1185. You may rest here between 1pm and 4pm.
Saturday Evening 430pm – 9pm
Nathan Koil – Via Darasuram : 4pm
Ramaswamy : 530pm
Chakrapani : 630pm
Aathi Varaha Perumal : 730pm
Sarangapani : 8pm- 9pm
Sunday Morning 7am-12noon

Thiru Mandangudi ( birth place of Thondaradi Podi Azhvaar – the temple is 2kms from Pulla Bhoothangudi) – 830am
Kapisthalam : 930am :There is a short cut from Thiru Mandangudi. You should be able to reach in 20mts
Koodalur: 1015am
Kalyanapuram : 11am
Kandiyur: 11.30am
From Kandiyur, you can take the Thiruvayaru- Ariyalur- Ulundurpet road and join NH 45.
You can have evening tiffin at Tindivanam (By Pass highway hotel)
And reach Kanchipuram by 5pm or so on Sunday
(IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO VISIT KOODALUR/KANDIYUR, YOU MAY RETURN TO KUMBAKONAM AFTER KAPISTHALAM AND RETURN VIA NH 45A. THERE IS A DIVERSION AT PANRUTI ABOUT 10KMS EXTRA. MY SUGGESTION IS TO DO KOODALUR AND RETURN VIA ARIYALUR/PERAMBALUR/NH 45)
Do let know if you would like me to talk to any of the Bhattars.
or for any other route / time information.

Dear Prabhu
ReplyDeleteMe & My wife will be in Trivandrum on 16JUL 0600am to have the sevai of Sri Padmanabha Swamy and I have booked to Tirunelveli at 1600 hrs and arr at 1945.
I would like to visit Nava tirupathy on 17 JUL plus two DD in that area and I am booked back to Chennai by Kanyakumari express at 1900 hrs.
Is it possible to give me the temples in order to save time and I wish to go back to Chennai by 1900 hrs.
Also please advise in Trivandrum area any other temple to be visited after seeing Lord Padmanabha and my departure time at 1600 hrs. And since I arrive
Tirunelveli at 1930 hrs can I use that time to visit any temples that night.
Also need Cab driver contact to see the temples in Tirunelveli area including Nava Tirupathi and two DD.
Many thanks for your assistance
Best regards
Babu Vedhiyam
You could visit Thiruvattaru ( near Marthandam) - 45min drive from Trivandrum
ReplyDeleteand Thiruvanparisaram (6kms Nagercoil).
You could also visit Suchindram on the Nagercoil - Kanyakumari road that day.
Instead of boarding a train at Trivandrum, you should move on to Nagercoil
in the 2nd half and finish the above two temples and take KK express from Nagercoil to Tirunelveli or you can take an express bus that will reach in 1 1/2 hours- the NH is very good and you will be there just as fast the train.
You may contact 94436 71632 for your trip to the temples around Tirunelveli.
He will be reasonable and will take you around to all the temples based on the temple timings.

Namaskaram Sri Prabhu,
ReplyDeleteGreat service that you are doing!
I am planning a trip to Kumbakonam Divya Desams next week. I want to know some information -
1) I will be coming alone, is there a decent budget place like a lodge or hotel to stay, which is (preferably near to the main bus stop)?
2) Is it possible to cover all Divya Desams + Vaduvur and Mannargudi from Kumbakonam, via bus? Please guide me on which bus to catch, which temples to combine on trips & where to catch?
3) How many days will it take to cover the DDs and Vaduvur - Mannargudi?
Thanking you in advance~
Srinivasan
1. You can stay at Andavan Ashramam behind Sarangapani Temple.
ReplyDeleteCharges are reasonable, decent place to stay.
Railway retiring room will be a good place to stay i.e if you are travelling by train.
Dhanam Lodge is 1/2 km- equidistant from both railway station and bus stand on the main road.
Siva International on TSR Big Street is a good place as well behind Sarangapani temple.
****************
Buses every 15-20minutes to Mannargudi. You can stand outside the station as well. It will pass through there. It will take about 1 hour from Kumbakonam.
Buses every 10minutes from Mannargudi to Vaduvur. It will take 20minutes to reach.
**************
Take 5am bus to Thiru Nageswaram - walk from there to Oppiliappan temple for darshan at 6am
From there take an auto to Nachiyar Koil - Rs. 100-125 to have darshan at 730am.
Buses are infrequent - only once an hour or so.
From Nachiyar Koil, take bus to Thiru Cherai ( 4kms - will take 10minutes)-815am
From Thiru Cherai, take Tiruvarur bus to Thiru Kannamangai - just over 15kms - will reach in 30minutes - 9am
From there, take bus to Thiruvarur ( 7kms) and from there take Nagai bound bus and get down at Keezhvelur(15kms). Take an auto -Rs. 50 to Thiru Kannangudi DD. Mini buses are available but will be infrequent
-1030am
From there, bus to Nagai ( 8kms) for darshan at 11.30am
If you are lucky you can do the above a little quicker to try and have darshan at Thiru Kannapuram before 12noon after Thiru Nagai.
and then you can return to Kumbakonam.
This will be very very tedious- only those with a lot of Bhakti and energy can do the above (through such bus trips in one of the day)
2nd half:
temples in Kumbakonam
Nathan Koil ( by auto - Rs. 300 to and fro)
Ramaswamy
Chakrapani
Aathi Varaha Perumal
Sarangapani
*************
Day 2 Morning
Bus to Pullam Bhoothangudi ( you can catch the 6am/7am bus) via Swami Malai to reach the temple by 730am/8am
You can finish Pullam Bhoothangudi and Athanur as well as Thiru Mandangudi (2kms from PB Gudi).
From Mandangudi, you can take mini bus to Kapisthalam.
915am
From Kapisthalam take Thiruvayaru bound bus to get down at Aduthurai for darshan at Thiru Koodalur Jagathrakshagan at 1015am.
You may continue to Thiruvayaru and have darshan at Kandiyur ( 3kms on Thiruvayaru-Thanjavur highway) at 11am
You may finish at Thanjai Maa Mani Koil - 3 temples at 11.30am
(5kms from Kandiyur on Thanjavur Highway)
You may then return to Kumbakonam via bus at 1230pm/1pm

Dear Mr. Prabhu.
ReplyDeleteAfter spending a day at Kanyakumari, my wife and I want to visit Trivandrum Padmanabha Swami and Suchindram temples the next day before taking an express bus to Tirunelveli (TNV) in the evening.
My first day at TNV, I want to go to Thirukkurungudi first including Malaimel Nambi and then Valliyur Murugan cave temple and Nanguneri Perumal (& Sivan?) temples before returning to TNV. Can I cover this day trip taking buses/auto? And if you suggest take cab service, I would like to cover Krishnapuram temple too.
Next day I would like to cover the Nava Thiruppathy temples, Thiruchendur Murugan temple (is there a cave there?) and back to TNV by the cab service (Could you recommend one?).
And next 2 days, I want to spend in the west side of TNV: Visit Nellaiappar Koil, Kallidai Kurichi Laxmi Varaha Perumal, Siva Sailam, Athalanallur , Mannarkoil Rajagopalaswami, Papanasam Sivan , Agasthiar falls and Manimuthar dam and return to TNV and take the Tiruchendur - Madras Egmore Express at 08:20 pm to Kumbakonam.
Could you sketch me a detailed (if possible) plan for the visits including place/s to stay and cab service?, for which I thank you very much.
Sincerely,
Nambi

yif you stay in the retiring room in Tirunelveli junction ( which is good), you can take the early morning Kanyakumari express to Valliyoor from where there are frequent buses passing through Thiru Kurungudi.
ReplyDeleteThis way you will be able to reach the temple by 630am. You can finish the temples there and return to Valliyoor and then you can visit Nanguneri as well in the first half of the day before 12noon.
In the 2nd half, starting at 4pm, you can visit Krishnapuram and the
temples in Tirunelveli.
The next morning you may take the bus to Azhvaar Tirunagari at 6am/7am from where you can engage an auto to visit the Nava Tirupathi temples
( Ananthu Bhattar of Thenthiruperai who stays in Azhvaar Tirunagari will organise an auto for you - will cost around 500-600). You will be able to finish this by 3pm. You can then move to tiruchendur and have darshan at 4pm
and return by evening passenger train to Tirunelveli to reach by 7pm.
Cab from Tirunelveli will be a more comfortable option: Contact: 94436 71632. He will be economical and will take you to all the temples when they are open.
You may also use him for Thiru Kurungudi, Nanguneri and Valliyoor as well as for the trip to Ambai and around.
Alternately for Ambai, you can take the morning passenger train that will reach in 45minutes. From Ambai, you can engage an auto locally. Contact PS Narasimha Gopalan Acharya at Mannar Koil on 04634 252874 and he will organise an auto for you.
Buses are quite frequent in this region. Hence you may go to papanasam from Ambai station by bus as well.
I have always used the train+ bus option to all of these places + local mini bus and auto.
Let know if you need any other information.

PS: There are some Divya Desams where you may not be able to spend more than half hour for a variety of reasons ( hence you will be able to spend enough time at some of the temples where there are other aspects - architecture/ tank/village surroundings to be seen as well)

Thank you very much Mr.Prabhu for taking the time to provide us with detailed schedule. It will really help us to navigate the whole trip with ease. we are not from there so do not know the area at all. I request you to kindly help us with the following
ReplyDelete1. Day1 - Dec 31 - We reach Trichy early morning, so we can get a place to stay for the night (early morining to next day morning) and use a cab to go around.
2. Day 2- Jan 1 - as we are staying at Kumbakonam for night halt, do we ask the car to pick us up in Trichy and drop off in the night at Kumbakonam?
3. Day 3 - Jan 2 - ask KUmbakonam car contact to take us around and drop off at mayavaram/vaidheeshwaran?
4. Day 4 - Jan 3 - request the same car to pick us up and take around and night halt would be where? because we have to come back to Trichy for taking the train to Rameswaram on Jan 4th night at 10.30 pm. Can I call you to seek your advise please.
Thank you very much, Lord Ranganatha may shower his blessings on you.

If you are coming by, staying in railway retiring room at Trichy Junction will be a good option.

ReplyDeleteDear Mr. Prabhu
ReplyDeleteI am visiting Thirupullani/Srivilliputtur & Tiruthangal during January 2017.
May I know how to reach Pullani to Srivilliputtur. How much time will it take as I like to complete all three Divya Desams before the afternoon session as I will be heading to Madurai.
I am in Pullani at 400 am so I can have a early start. Any Transportation contact you have which will be reasonable or take a bus if it is expensive.
Your reply much appreciated and Many thanks

Dear mr. Prabhu,
ReplyDeleteFirst of all I want to thank you for the amazing help that you are doing here . We are put up in BANGALORE and we wish to visit the 11 Divya Deshams in kumbakonam and then visit few main temples in thanjavur and Chidambaram .. we want to cover them in 4 days and will be driving in our car.. please kindly advise the best order of temples that we can follow .. should we cover thanjavur and Chidambaram first and then come to kumbakonam ? Awaiting your reply ..thanks .. may god bless you ..
Thiru Pullani to Thiruthangal is around 150kms. By bus, it is likely to take a minimum of 4hours, even if you get a direct bus. Hence it is unlikely you will be able to reach Thiruthangal before 12noon.
ReplyDeleteCar will cost at least 1500/-. probably a lot more.
If you take a car, it is probable that you can reach Thiruthangal in 2 hours.

Thanks a ton Prabhu sir for the detailed explanation .. we owe you for this .. I also had one more doubt .. while we are there at thanjavur , we were also thinking of going to brihadeeshwaran temple and swamalai.. but don't know on which day can we cover this as per the plan given by you .. can you please suggest on that part as well.. sorry for bothering you so much and thanks a lot in advance ..
ReplyDeleteYou could do Brihadeeswarar temple day 1 2nd half:
ReplyDeleteYou could start at 230pm from Kumbakonam and go straight to Brihadeeswarar temple to reach there at 315pm.
And then you can start the Divya Desam temples from Thanjai Maa Mani temple at 430pm.
******************
Swami Malai is on the way from Pullam Bhoothangudi / Athanur on the way to Kumbakonam.
After finishing Athanur at 8pm, you have to pass Swami Malai temple
to reach Kumbakonam. Hence you could do Swami Malai 815pm to 9pm 2nd half of Day 1.
you may call or text message me on 94440 40748 for any information on the days of your trip (in case you want me to inform any of the Bhattars in advance).
Have a good darshan.

Dear sir
ReplyDeleteFirst of all I would like to congratulate you for the excellent work being done by you in helping the bhaktas.
I am mrs. Usha Ramadurai from Pune. My husband and I would like to have darisanam of the divyadesams around kumbakonam, thanjavur, trichy, mannargudi and mayavaram. We are arriving in kumbakonam on 15th march at night. We would start from 16th morning to go around these places.
I request you to please plan an itinerary for us. We would like to visit Tiruppattur brahma koil, patteeswaram durgai and darasuram too. Can we stay in kumbakonam and visit the temples? We can stay in kumbakonam for 3 or 4 days and then go to trichy for one or two days. Since we have never been to south Tamil Nadu we don't have an idea whether to stay in kumbakonam or thanjavur or trichy or mayavaram. Please guide us.
Thank you
Usha Ramadurai
Thanks for the kind words.
DeleteBest to stay in kumbakonam
call cab owner saravanan in advance and block him for two three days. He will take you to all temples iaround mayavaram thanjavur kumbakonam ncluding patteswarm dara suram
he will give you a reasonable rate.
Then you can move on to tricky from where you can visit tirupattur temple
Thank you very much Sir
ReplyDeleteHow many days in advance should I contact Mr. Saravanan, for cab booking?
Usha Ramadurai
Can you call him this week to block and you can reconfirm first week of March.
DeleteI can also talk to him later if you so wish.
He is a good human being.

Since you are starting at 7am, would suggest that you visit 13 Divya Desams in and around Thiru Nangur as going to Kumbakonam would rule out any darshan in the first half of the day.

Hi sir
ReplyDeleteYour reply to my previous query was very useful and we peacefully visited around 40 temples in 4 days.
Now this is for my friend's family. They are planning to reach Thanjavur by Saturday. They want to visit thanjai periya kovil, pillayarpatti and Navagraha temples in 3 days. Please guide us. They are planning to stay in kumbakonam on 2nd and 3rd day of the trip.
Madam,
ReplyDeleteThanks for the kind words.
Pillayarpatti is quite a distance away (100+ kms).
It will take one half of a day to do that from Thanjavur.
They can finish Periya Koil, Punnai Nallur Mariamman and Kothandaramar
in one half of the day.
After lunch, they can leave for Pillayarpatti by car and return to Kumbakonam via Thanjavur in the night.
They may call Senthil ( cab) at Thanjavur for this trip - 94435 88102
For Navagriha trip, they may call Saravanan @ 99945 46416.
They should be able to do it in one day.
On the third day they may visit other temples of their choice depending on their interests
( Thevaram Sthalams or Divya Desams)

Dear Prabhu sir,
ReplyDeleteIn our above plan to visit pandyanadu divyadeshams , we are planning to visit thirupullani later in the month of november , as we have seperate plan to Visit rameshwaram .. so we can goto thirupullani at that time ..
Now as we are removing thirupullani from our plan which was provided by you earlier , I guess we will have to cover thiru Koshtiyur and thirumeyyam first and then goto Madurai .. pls advise whether we are correct ... sorry for the change in the plan ..
Thanks
🙏🙏
Janaki
My suggestion is to combine Thiru Koshtiyur and Thiru Meiyam with the Thiru Pullani trip.
ReplyDeleteBoth of these are big temples and you may like to spend 1 1/2 to 2 hours inside.
There may not be good food places available around these two temples and hence if you are coming from long, those may pose as a problem to you on the first evening.
It is easier to come through from Ramnad to these two places and return to Bangalore from Thiru Meiyam.
(Also, if you do choose to do Thiru Koshtiyur and Thiru Meiyam as your first destination, you will have to ensure that you reach Thiru Kurungudi before 2pm i.e if you are interested to visit the hill temple there on 2nd or 3rd day)
Prabhu
3rd Day Evening:
ReplyDeleteYou can return to Bangalore starting 2pmish on 3rd evening after Nava Tirupathi
Or
You may visit Krishnapuram and Palayamkottai Perumal temples on 3rd evening 5pm -8pm after Nava Tirupathi(both these are good ancient temples to visit), rest for the night at Tirunelveli and start your drive back on 4th morning.
Hello sir, it's soo nice of you to hell so many people with your experience.

ReplyDeletePlease let me have a tour programme for fourdays from 21st August evening to 25th August evening to cover divyadesams in kumbakonam, sirkali, mayavaram, nagai and thanjavur
ReplyDeleteDear Prabhu, Thanks for the excellent blog! I plan to make a road trip from Bangalore with my wife and 11 year old son to Divyadesams and Shiva temples in Tanjavur, Kumbakonam, Seerkazhi, Mayavaram, Chidambaram before going to Pondicherry and then back to Blore. Please let me know the following
ReplyDelete1. Is it practical to hope to cover all the temples in 4 days?
2. Please let me know local travel contacts who can take us around
3. Please suggest places to stay
Many thanks in advance.
Warm Regards,
Bharadwaj
Thanks Sir, for the kind words.
ReplyDeleteYes you can easily cover these in four days especially if you have your own transport.
If you are the traditional kind or at least are okay with managing on these 4days, you may consider:
Andavan Ashram for stay in Kumbakonam (you can have this as a base for 1-2 days)
Contact Annan Koil Madhava Bhattar for stay in Thiru Nangur/Sirkazhi, which you can have as a base for 1 day.
However, if hotels is what you prefer, you may consider: Green Park in Kumbakonam, Sathabhishekam in Vaitheeswaran Koil to have as a base.
If you are clear on the temples that you want to visit, there is no need for a local travel contact in most of these places.
For Thiru Nangur, Madhava Bhattar will help you with a guide to go around the 13 temples.
Otherwise, the respective priests will brief you on the highlights of the temple.
If you want a route guide to visit these temples, do let me know and will send you/email you.
Can also talk to some of the priests to assist you.
Prabhu
Dear Prabhu Sir,
ReplyDeleteThanks for a detailed information and helping out many devotees to visit the temples. I am reaching Kumbakonan on 18/10 by 2PM and will be returning back by 3PM 21/10. I am planning to visit the Divya desam and if possible cover the Navgragha temple on the way. Also wanted to visit Veerasingapetai Mariammam Koil and Thrimanancheri temple. I have 3 Senior citizens, can i also visit nangur temple. Please let me know how to plan.
Thank You for the kind words.
ReplyDeleteYes, you can easily cover.
18th 2nd half: Kumbakonam Temples
19th 1st half: 530am to 12.30pm - Oppiliappan, Nachiyar Koil, Thiru Cherai, Thiru Kannamangai, Thiru Kannangudi and Thiru Nagai.
19th 2nd half: Thiru Kannapuram, Sirupuliyur, Therazhundur and Thiru Velliyangudi
20th 1st half: Navagriham/Mariamman/Thirumanancheri
20th 2nd half: Pullam Bhootghangudi / Athanur/Kapisthalam/Koodalur
21st 1st half: Indhalur/Thiru Nangur (7am to 3pm)
It will be a tiring trip to go non stop like this from one temple to another.
Hence you may skip a few temples based on your energy levels.
Depending on where you have to return, you can keep Thiru Nangur for the 21st and return to your destination from there instead of coming back all the way to Kumbakonam.
In case you are not comfortable with the costs, please let me know.
Prabhu
Thanks. I have decided to skip Nangur and cover only Alangudi, Thirunallar and Vaitheeswaran koil. Can u send me updated plan.

ReplyDeleteDear Mr. Prabhu
ReplyDeleteI am reaching Tirchy on 26Nov at 2030. Wish to have the "Vishvaroopa Dharshan" of Lord Ranganatha on 27Nov. If you are aware, what time should I be in Srirangam Temple on that day and can I book the ticket in advance/Contacts or any details relating to this will be very useful. By God's grace, if I get the Dharshan would be very pleased. Kindly help.
Best regards
Please be at the South Gopuram entrance by 5.15am
ReplyDeleteThey will allow entry into the temple at 530am.
Walk to the Ariya Bhattal Vaasal.
At the Dwajasthambam, take a right and get to the counter.
Vishroopam ticket costs Rs. 100. You can watch the Veenai Recital till around
6am and then have Vishwaroopam Darshan by 630am.
There is no advance booking.
You have to buy the ticket at the counter.
You should not have a problem with the darshan.
It is a pretty streamlined process and you can sit and watch
the Veenai recital for 20minutes or so.

First of all, thanks for your great service. Please guide for a trip from trichy covering divyadesams of kumbakonam and sirkazhi in two days, will be coming by car thanks a lot.
ReplyDeleteDear Mr. Prabhu
ReplyDeleteWe will be coming to Kumbakonam to visit Oppliappan temple plus Thirupampuram for Raghu & Kethu and Tirunallaru for Sani releif. Can I see any Divya desam enroute as I have a train back to Trichy at 1500 hrs.
Kindly assist so that I can call Saravanan and book him for this trip.
Thankyou
Vizhudiyam
If you visit Oppiliappan at 530amish, then you can try Therazhundur Divya Desam and Sirupuliyur Divya Desam ( very close to Thirupampuram) enroute to Thirunallar or on the way back.
ReplyDeleteOn return trip, you may try Thiru Kannapuram / Mudikondan.
( but these may not be open after 12noon/1230pm)
So would be good for you to call the priest in advance to check if they can keep it open till you come.
Prabhu
Many thanks for your immediate response, which is very useful
