ThiruNangur Divya Desams

11 Divya Desams in and around Thiru Nangur near Seerkazhi
Deities from each of the Thiru Nangur temples go out on a street procession on Garuda Vahanam and come together at Mani Mada Koil in Thai

Angered at not being invited for the Yaagam conducted by Parasakthi’s father Dakshan, Shiva is said to have performed the Rudra Thaandavam in a place called Ubaya Cauvery (between Cauvery in the South and Mani River in the North), a few kms South East of Seerkazhi.

So aggressive was his performance that for every hair that fell down on the ground, a new form of Shiva emerged. And very quickly 11 forms of Shiva were each performing the Rudra Thaandavam. Sensing a possible damage to the world as a result of Shiva’s fury, Lord Vishnu appeared here before Shiva as Paramapatha Naathan.

Softened by the presence of Lord Vishnu, Rudra requested Vishnu appear in just as many forms. Lord Vishnu is said to have acceded to this request and provided darshan to Rudra in 11 different forms here in Thiru Nangur, having taken one form each from 11 different Divya Desams. These together constitue the 11 Divya Desams in and around Thiru Nangur.

In the Tamil calendar month of Thai (mid Jan-mid February), the deities from these Divya Desams go out on a street procession in the Garuda Vaahanam and congregate at the Mandapam in the Narayana Perumal Mani Maada Koil in ThiruNangur. At the Mani Maada Koil, Thiru Mangai Azhvaar sings praise of each of the 11 forms of Vishnu (http://prtraveller.blogspot.in/2017/03/thiru-nangur-11-garuda-sevai.html).
1. ThiruVellankulam Annan Koil

Located away from the hustle and bustle of towns and cities, Annan Koil Divya Desam (http://prtraveller.blogspot.in/2017/12/annan-perumal-koil.html) is located in the middle of a village, 8 kms South East of Seerkazhi off the Poompuhar- Thirukadaiyur road. Looked at as the elder brother of Tirupathi Srinivasa, it is believed that those who cannot go to Tirupathi can come here and ‘Annan’ is said to fulfill their wishes. Lord here is seen together with the Goddess (Alar Mel Mangai) unlike in Tirupathi where he is seen alone. This is the only Divya Desam where the diety and Goddess have the same names as in Tirupathi.

Thiru Mangai Mannan wanted to marry Kumudha Valli who belonged to the generation of the Devas. Mangai Mannan is said to have worked with utmost sincerity towards fulfilling each of Kumuda Valli’s conditions to marry him. It is believed that Mangai Mannan finally married Kumudavalli at this place. Hence, there is a separate sannidhi for Kumudha Valli at this temple.

The Story
King Dhundhu Maaran, who belonged to the Surya dynasty, had a son Swethan who was destined to die at the tender age of 9. Swethan came here to undertake penance to increase his lifetime. Lord Vishnu is said to have appeared before him as Srinivasa and fulfilled his prayers. Hence, this is said to be a place when one’s sincere prayers will prevent untimely death.

Thirumangai Azhvaar came here, had darshan of the Lord and praised him here as if he has seen Lord Srinivasa himself. His Paasurams also reflect the fact that the Lord is the elder brother of Tirupathi Srinivasa.

“ Kaliyan Sonna Maalai Vallaaravar Vaanaraguvai Thaamey” shows this Lord as the elder brother.

10. Thiru Paarthaan Palli
Located near Thiruvenkadu (Budhan Sthala) about 15kms from Sirkazhi off the Poompuhar road, legend has it that Arjuna reached this place while on a pilgrimage. Feeling thirsty after a long trip, he could not find water anywhere.  Seeing Sage Agastya undertaking penance at this place, he was hopeful that he would be able to quench his thirst at the ashram but to his dismay he found that the Sage’s Kamandala too had gone dry.

As instructed by Parthasarathy, Arjuna struck the ground with the sword and to his surprise water poured out of that place helping him quench his thirst. To mark this event, Arjuna is seen here at this Divya Desam with a sword. Since Arjuna had this Knowledge initiation here and played the role of a student, this temple came to be known after him as ‘Parthan Palli’ (http://prtraveller.blogspot.in/2012/07/parthan-palli-divya-desam.html)

Poigai Azhwar’s praise

I recently visited the kshetra and was fortunate to receive darshan at 9 out of the 12 (including Seerkazhi Trivikramar koil). I would like to add that the bhattar at Manimada koil is Satish Narayana and not just Narayana. He is called Satish and hence, asking for a Narayana bhattar creates a minor confusion. Secondly, I thought it might help to note that a Mohan lives in the village of Nangur. He provides services of an autodriver and is very pleasant and helpful as a person. He would take folks around to all the temples and is familiar with all the bhattars of that area (so he actually fetches them in case they have shut the temple and gone home). He was a blessing for us on the trip. His contact number is: 9486303430.
It might help people to ask for Hotel Sampoorna (though it is more of a lodge) which is very near the Seerkazhi bus stand. The rooms are decent.

I had the grace of almighty Sri Narayana to visit all the eleven temples other than Thrivikramar at Seergazhi, with my wife and brother Parthasarathy and his wife Bhanu. Sri Madhava Bhatacharya at Annan Koil has been a pillar of strength in organizing our visits to all the temples through a driver who is well versed with the routes and known to all the Bhatacharyas of the shrines. Madhava Bhatachariar can be contacted through 9489856554 and he stays at Annan Koil.

The enormous details provided by Sri Prabhu will definitely instigate people to visit all these temples. Marvelous efforts taken by Mr Prabhu is appreciable by all the devotees of Narayana.

Swamins,

Adiyen Soundararaja Dasan had been to Seerkazhi and Tirunangur Divyadesams along with family.

Auto Services by Sudarsan Iyengar were noteworthy.

Sudarsan Iyengar knows all the bhattachars in Nangur Temples which is helpful when many temples are to be covered within a day.

Also, he provides lunch and stay facilities for Sevarthis. This is helpful since we can abstain from taking food at hotels.

My opiniopn is that anyone visiting Nangur Divyadesams can make use of his Auto and Hospitality Services.

ThriuMangai Azhwar Mangalasasanam event in Thai amavaysa is very significant event in Thirunangur Divaya Desam.

Every perumal in Nangur divya desam are so much attached to Azhwar, because only the thriumangai azhwar pasuram given the status of Divya desams.

Visited 11 divya desams on 24/11/3013 using Mohans auto. Phone no9486303430. As these temples are interior, archakas complete the pujas and lock the temple. Therefore, it is necessary that archakas have to be located to get temple opened up for darshan. Mohan arranged this and his efforts are appreciable. Though auto charges seemed little higher but it was it.
Thank u again prabhu for igniting urge within me to visit 11 divya desams.

I recently visited Sirkazhi and with God's grace visited about 13 divya desam in and around Sirkazhi. Thanks to Mr. Subramanian a local resident of Sirkazhi who accompanied us in the car and took us to all the temples. He has the phone no.s of all the priests in the temples and is able to coordinate with them so that we can visit all of them, as in some cases it is the same priest who is taking care of two or more temples. We started at 8.00 a.m in the morning and finished having the Darshan by 12:30 in the afternoon.

Many thanks to Mr.s Subramanian whom you can contact on phone - 9159706875. Before visiting you can contact him and fix your date and timings with him. WE paid him Rs.500/- for his noble service. Which he accepted very gracefully.

Hello All, I have recently visited (Nov first week of 2016) and had Dharshan of almost 12 divyadesams near Sirkazhi. It's all because of Perumal krubai that I got a very good auto man who is Mr. Thirumurugan alias kolanji who knows all the routes for all the divyadesams and even bhatters house and their phone numbers to contact and also the timings. He stays at Thiruvellakulam/Annan Perumal koil. He is having both auto and car for making easy Dharshan for the devotees. His contact numbers: 97914 00104 / 88831 76227. His travels name is "T.Vishnu Nethran Travels". Almost all of the bhatters knows him very well. Please use him for easy Dharshan. I have the photocopy of his business card/visiting card. But unfortunately there is no option here to upload and so I have provided his contact numbers and all other details. Thanks!

Adiyen Srinivasan here...

This post was very, very useful in our recent trip to ThiruNangur Divyadesams. I would like to offer some updates as of Sep 2017.

1. Except for two, the other temples have individual Archakas. Most of them follow the prescribed timings and discourage opening the temple once it has been closed for Uchikalam. Please bear this in mind. In any case, we should try to follow the timings as much as possible.

2. There are about 5-6 guides at AnnanKoil and they approach you when you reach the temple. As mentioned by others, they know the optimal route and would ensure that you have Sevai at all the temples. Please follow their directions.

3. Being at Annan Koil between 7 to 8 am in the morning seems the most optimal time. After Sevai there, the guide can take you around the route and put you back at Annan Koil between 12 and 1.30, depending on your speed at the various temples. This is the most ideal route since Sri Madhava Bhattar can take care of simple Prasadams for lunch.

4. It is also possible to start at Annan Koil and go to Sirkazhi at the end. If so the guide might take you to Thirunagar temple at the end.

5. Of course, if you use the auto/car service from Sirkazhi or Annan Koil, you don't need a separate guide. The driver would double up as the guide.

6. We visited during Purattasi Utsavam. Both breakfast and lunch are arranged during this time. We had told the guide that we would spend a bit more time at each temple. We also had to retrace the route a bit to have Sevai at Sri Rajagoplaswamy temple. In spite of that, we returned to Annan Koil by 1.35 PM, in time for Sathumurai and Theertham.

I had this strange dream in which a divine voice asked me to come to Thirunangur and see him. I never heard of this name before in life, at that time I was in Malaysia. So couldn't travel to India. But this name kept on ringing in my mind. Recently I moved back to Chennai and looking forward to visit Thirunangur and find out why I was Called to visit this place. Thanks to this post now I know more about Thirunangur. Can anyone share how I can travel from Sirkazhi to all these temples. Last Saturday i.e., 31st March 2018, we (myself & Mr. Sowmya Narayanan from Chinthamani - Puliyangudi) visited Thiru Nangur Divya Desam temples. The following are our observations, of-course which echoes with the previous posts:

a. As described by other sevarthis, covering all the temples without a local guide will be difficult. We took the assistance of Mr. Subramani, who could coordinate with the local priests and ascertain/confirm their availability.

b. In my personal opinion, hiring a vehicle from Mayiladuthurai is more economical and worthy. We had hired a vehicle from Mayavaram Cabs (Proprietor Mr. Swaminathan is a very nice person and equally are his drivers Karunanithi & Rasaiah). I had used the vehicle for 3 days continuously to cover other Divya Desams & Padal Petra Sthalams of Sirkali, Tharagampady & Mayavaram Talukas.

Went to thirunangur temples in April. Had very good Darshan of all the temples. In one day covered mayavaram and thirunangur divyadesams along with pancha Narasimnar temples. One auto driver Kolanji was very helpful. Without a local persons help will be difficult to cover in one day as there is no signboards at all for many temples. Kolanji ph no 9791400104. Picked from the bus stand and after the trip dropped in the bus stand and got very reasonable amount.

Thank you swamin for your excellent post. This was inspiration and very helpful for our trip last week (Apr 2018). We used Mohan's auto and as mentioned by others, he was very helpful in talking to various temple bhattars, confirming their availability and making sure we had darshan of all the temples. Mohan charged Rs.1900/- for full day (we started at 8am and finished by 8pm and were based at Vaideeswaran koil). Though I initially thought the amount to be slightly higher, by end of the day, I was convinced that this amount is very reasonable and paid him Rs.2000/-. We have no hesitation in recommending Mohan for such a trip. We were very blessed by Emperuman and Emperumanaar (the day being 1001st thirunakshatram of emperumaanaar). Though we did not know Sathish bhattar of Mani mada koil, Narayanan (Almighty) of Manimada koil through Sathish bhattar called Mohan around 12.15pm (though we were about 6kms away) and asked us to come back to Manimada koil for koshti & prasadams. We were blessed to return and have prasadam for lunch. Similarly, when we went to Thalachangaadu we were blessed to be with the koshti and had wonderful prasadam at around 4pm (ramanuja nootrandhadhi). In all, we had darshan of 15 temples (11 thirunangur temples, thiruvali, thirunagari, thalanchangadu, kazhicheerama vinnagaram - sirgazi). It was indeed a wonderful experience. Since we were staying at vaideeswaran koil (for a function), we used this opportunity and visited thiruindalur (mayiladuthurai) next day evening, and once again we were blessed by emperuman and received huge amount of His prasadams. Of course, we used a different local auto for this trip and paid Rs.500 (round trip). We pray that all people who wish to have this darshan get their wishes fulfilled (aasai udaiyorkku ellam...)

Is it possible to cover all temples in a day? How early should we be there for the same. I read many people recommending mr mohan for the commute locally. Will be helpful if someone give out his latest contact number

Please call satish narayanan bhattar @ 9443985843. He will help you with darshan at all the temples there.

Yes you can start at 7am at annan koil and finish all the temples by 1230pm.

You can then leave for Thalai Changa Naan Mathiyam and finish that by 2pm/3pm. That is open through the day.

Is Garuda Sevai going to be held this year on Feb 11,12 ,2021 .Any idea?

Very good write up of all the Divya Desams around Thirunangur. Thank you very much for your service to pilgrims. The others comments and contact numbers provided also gives confidence to anyone who plans to visit. One question though - is it a good time to visit all these temples a couple of days before the Garudasevai festival in Thai masam? Which is the best place to stay around this place which providez hygenic accommodation during this pandemic?

Prabhu.S said...

Unlikely there will be crowd couple of days ahead of Garuda Sevai.

Ahobila Mutt has built a place for devotees to stay. It will be hygenic. You may contact Shri. Seshadri @ 9487648090. You may contact him for booking of rooms.

Thank You

Any travels based out of chidambaram for divya desham temple visit?

Anonymous said...

We visited thirunangoor divya desams last saturday.
Some points to note
1) it is better to visit on a Saturday as more devotees visit and temples will be open longer
2) we hired a cab from Mayavaram. Mr Ravi 90432 22552. He was excellent, very polite, had good local knowledge of temple timings, routes.
3) Even famous temples inside the town open only by minimum 7.30 AM. Hence no use reaching before that
4) We finished all thirunangoor temples, sirgazhi Thaadalan perumal and Thalachangadu between 7.30 AM and 12.30 PM.
It was a divine experience and a wonderful trip

Hi, we availed the auto service of one Mr.Kolanji Thirumurugan (+91 97914 00104) who had the contacts of all temple archakas.
We started by 8am from Annan perumal temples and finished all the 11 Divya dreams by 12.30noon.
He charged us 1500 which is reasonable

By the divine blessing had an opportunity to have dharshan of Divya Desam in and around Tirunangur. Stayed in Tirunangur between 16:30 hours on 13.08.2023 to 21:30 hours on 14.08.2023. Unforgettable moment.
Stayed @ Sri Ahobila Mutt. At this juncture I must thank Kolanji Tirumurugan owning Auto helped me to have dharshan of 16 Divya Desam as detailed below.

Tirukavalampaadi Rajagopalan
Tirumanikoodam Gajendra Varadhan
Tiruparthanpalli Parthasarathi
Tiruteriambalam Ranganathar
Ariyemeya Vinnagaram kudamadukoothan
Manimada koil Badri Narayana perumal
Van Purushothaman koil
Semponsei koil
Vaikuntha  Vinnagaram
Annan Perumal koil
Tiruvali
Tirudevanar thogai
Tirunagari
Kazhi cheerama vinnagaram
Tiruchitira koodam
Thalachangadu Nanmadiyam Perumal

The charges for him totalling Rs.3300 including dropping me @ Sirkazhi Railway Station. He is quite kind and humble. Also he has good rapo with Archagas of temples. Felt worthy of Mr. Kolanji Tirumurugan will be the best choice for completing dharshan in and around Tirunangur.
