ThiruVidanthai Nithya Kalyana Perumal

Belief is that unmarried people will find their life partner immediately if they visit this temple

Located on East Coast Road, about 40 kms South of Madras and 1 km North of Crocodile bank is the Nithya Kalyana Perumal Koil at Thiruvidanthai, a temple praised by Thiru Mangai Azhvaar in his Periya Thirumozhi verse.

Brahmachaari Lord getting married here
Lord Narayana came here as a Brahmachaari, answering the prayers of Kaalava Rishi and married 360 young daughters of the Rishi in one year. On the last day, he is said to have merged them into one and given darshan with Goddess on his left. Hence the Goddess here is called ‘Agila Valli Thaayaar’. Having married one girl a day here at this temple, the Lord is called ‘Nithya Kalyana Perumal’.

Being the place where the Lord married every day of the year, it is believed to be a very auspicious temple relating to marriage. Legend has it that unmarried people will immediately find their life partner if they visit this place and offer their prayers to Nithya Kalyana Perumal. The temple priests confirm that they have been a witness to the Lord answering instantly the prayers of unmarried men and women and their parents.

Unique Posture of the Lord
At this temple, one finds the Lord in a unique standing posture facing East. While one leg is on the ground, the other is on Adhisheshan and his wife. And he is seen balancing Goddess Agila Valli on his left thigh.

Bali's penance and Aadhi Varaha providing Darshan
Asuras wanted to take on the Devas and sought the help of Bali, son of Asura Meganathan. Bali, known for his fairness, asked them not to fight the Devas without a cause and refused to support the Asuras. Without Bali’s participation, the Asuras were soundly defeated. The Asuras surrendered to Bali and once again requested him to fight for them. Pushed by the Asuras, Bali agreed and under his leadership the Asuras won.

Bali is said to have undertaken penance here at Thiruvidanthai to atone the sin of fighting the Devas without a just cause. Pleased with his prayers, Lord Aadhi Varaaha is believed to have appeared before him and provided Moksham to him at this place.

Chozha Kings and Thiruvidanthai temple
Raja Raja Chozha celebrated a 7day festival in Aavani and a 9day festival in Panguni. He also fed a number of Brahmins here. Vijaya Rajendra Chozha  donated this entire village to the Thiruvidanthai Lord.

Thiru Mangai Azhvaar's Periya Thiru Mozhi Praise
Thiru Mangai Azhvaar in his Periya Thiru Mozhi verses refers to the 'daughter's' yearning for the Lord. And how she has been having sleepless nights thinking of the handsome Lord all the time. And the fact she has been uttering only the Lord's name every time she speaks.

The Name Thiru Vidanthai
This place is also called Nithya Kalyana Puri, Sri Puri and Varaaha Puri. As the Lord merged 360 girls into one and appeared with the Goddess on his left on the last day, this place is called Thiru- Idanthai (Thiru-Goddess, Idanthai-left side), which in course of time became ThiruVidanthai.

Hello Prabhu,

I would like to come with my daughter for the Kalyanam pooja. Could you please help me with the auspicious dates and timings available in March and April 2013.

Also, what is the best way to reach the temple from Bangalore.

Please note that the phone numbers provided are unavailable.

Thanks.

PRabhu S said...

For the Kalyana Pooja, any day is fine in March and April.

The phone numbers should work ( sometimes the cell may be switched off. If they are outside, there may be no one to pick the land line). I will reconfirm.

If you are coming by train, get down at Madras Central, take Mahabalipuram bound buses from Broadway/Parrys Corner bus Stand ( which is 1kms North East of the Station) and get down at Thiru Vidanthai.

Alternately, you can board bus No. 1 from outside the Central Station and get down at Thiruvanmiyur bus stand.( this will take about 45minutes)

From Thiruvanmiyur bus stand, there are buses every 10-15minutes towards Thiruvidanthai( this will take about 30-45minutes)

also me and girl friend are going since she cant go alone and her parents wont come with her.

Why m asking this Q is because in previous posts u said that boy or gal should go with their family members only for good effect,

So shall we both go to the temple together and do pooja for her alone ? ? Is this okay ?

PRabhu S said...

It would be good for her to go alone or with her family.

You can take one of the following two routes:

Kanchipuram- Chengalpet- Mahabalipuram- Thiruvidanthai via ECR ( this is the old route from Kanchipuram to Thiruvidanthai) - Good road, straight road, safe to take this without too many turns - My suggestion is to take this.

or

Kanchipuram-Chengalpet- Thiru Porur - Kelambakkam- Kovalam Junction-Thiruvidanthai

A third option is through the new Oragadam - Vandalur highway:

Kanchipuram- Walajabad - Oragadam- Vandalur- Kelambakkam - Kovalam Junction - Thiruvidanthai

If you are coming by train from Bangalore, it is best to stay in the retiring room at Central Station - You have neat dormitories, double rooms AC and non AC at the price range you are looking at.

Hotels in Mylapore/Adyar which are on the way to the temple from Central Station would cost Rs. 2000+

( Hotel Shelter - 4924 1909 / Hotel Karpagam - 24959984 are two such hotels in Mylapore)

or you could look at City Manor (43178271) or Crescent Inn (42676767) in Thiruvanmiyur which is closer to Thiruvidanthai.

Madam,

Renovation activity does not make a difference to the Kalyana Pooja.

You may call the priest (number given in the story) and visit the temple
and follow the process as mentioned by him.

All will be well.

Do offer your sincere prayers there.

Hi Prabhu,
I have seen these post and yoir spontaneous comments. Really appreciate tgis initiative of yours.

I had a query.. i am planning to visit tge trmple in last week of April. Me and one of my male freind want to travel together as the temple is in a small village in chennai where i dnt prefer to go alone as a female. My freind also want to do the kalyana puja for him. I read above that we cannot travel with someone except parents if we want this puja to be successfull. Is that true. Can we travel together but do puja separately. Please let me.know if ther is any issues then i would change the plan. I want this puja to be success for my marriage.

Hi Prabhu,
Nice information thanks a lot, I am planing to go tomorrow 9/7/17 they do kalyana pooja on Sunday? And I am traveling from Bangalore to this Temple plz suggest how to reach
Regards,
Madhu.

PRabhu S said...

If you are coming by train, it is best to take a cab service.
It will take about an hour to reach early morning.

This is enroute to Mahabalipuram, a km before the Crocodile bank.

If you are coming by car from Bangalore, take the Sriperambudur-Vandalur road.
From Vandalur take the Kelambakkaam road, cross OMR to reach ECR. Take a right on ECR to reach Thiruvidanthai.

Hi sir,

I am trying to visit temple. Can you please guide me to visit the temple. Where I get buses from egmore Railway Station.
Thanks in advance..

PRabhu S said...

Sir,

If you are looking only at the public transport options, here are the suggestions:

1. Take 29C and get down at Tiruvanmiyur ( frequency of this bus is very high - one every few minutes). It will take about 45mts - 1hour. From there, board any bus bound for Mahabalipuram/Pondicherry and get down in front of the temple at Thiruvidanthai.

or

2. Take a local Suburban train from Egmore Station to Fort Station.
From Fort Station, take a MRTS train to Tiruvanmiyur Station. ( I think it may be possible to buy a ticket from Egmore Station to Tiruvanmiyur- you can check that at the ticket counter). From there you can board the Mahabalipuram bound bus.

Have a good darshan.

Will nithya kalyan perumal temple be open around Holi 2022?
Do unmarried people have to come and do pooja alone or is it like a Yagya which is done with the help of a Pandit?
Kindly help.

Can you suggest some nearby hotels?

Prabhu.S said...

Timings are there in the story.

You may stay in a hotel in Mylapore - Karpagam Hotel on South Mada Street/ Shelter on Venkatesa Agraharam

If you are coming by train from outside Madras, retiring room at Central or Egmore Station is a good place to stay.
